Germany warns Turkey over Nazi jibes amid referendum row

But Sigmar Gabriel also emphasised his wish to return to "friendly relations".

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused Germany of "Nazi practices" because of the cancellation of rallies involving Turkish ministers.

He is seeking new constitutional powers in a 16 April referendum.

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu repeated the Nazi comparison on a visit to Hamburg aimed at drumming up support among some of the 1.4m Turkish voters who live in Germany.

Weapons disposal program needed in Bougainville

Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on the Bougainville Referendum and Southern Highlands Governor, William Powi, said this today following a recent trip to the island.

Powi said both issues were key milestone activities that needed to be addressed before the referendum, which was a significant and historic moment for them, could take place.

Under the Bougainville Peace Agreement, the region is due to hold the independence vote before 2020.

The Autonomous Bougainville Government has set up the Department of Referendum, Veterans' Affairs and Peace, with former President, James Tanis, as the interim secretary.

Mr Tanis says they will prepare the region for the vote but to do that they need assistance, and he wants the international community to pitch in.
