Today, the nation's capital is boasting an interesting compilation of wet weather-inspired attire.

Loop PNG, while out and about this gloomy Saturday, observed some unique and practical wet weather outfits.

Furthermore, the weather office has warned that the wet season in the country is now reaching its peak, with more rain expected in the coming weeks.

Wet season reaches peak: Weather service

The National Weather Service predicts that parts of the country will experience heavier rainfalls with threats of flooding and very strong winds.

Assistant director of Forecasting and Warning Centre at the National Weather Service, Jimmy Gomoga, says the current weather forecast shows normal wet weather conditions throughout the country, with much of the rain experienced in the Highlands Region.

He says the rainy season should wind down in April/May and we should reach normal dry period in June.

Recent rain causes flooding in Central Province

Rains bring respite to drought hit Vanuatu

However the operations manager of the National Disaster Management Office says despite receiving positive reports from some of the areas most affected by months of drought his office remains vigilant and will be monitoring the situation as the rains cease.

Peter Korisa says he feels that some communities will have benefited more than others from the short period of heavy rain.

Parts of Highlands get good rains

 Sitango said dry soils had been watered by rains in the last three weeks in parts of Western and Southern Highlands.

Plants are starting to put up leaves and this is looking good, he said.

Sitango said some communities are making gardens, including sweet potato mounds but in small quantities due to a  lack of planting materials.

He however stated that these regrowth and new plantings would not last when the monsoon rain ends and drought returns, as predicted.

The government says extreme rain and wind is predicted to continue for several days.

It says the heavy rain can cause flooding and landslides, and flood waters and mud can be dangerous for health, and increase the risk of disease.
