Preliminary roll

Check the roll, do not miss out!

Chief Referendum Officer, Mauricio Claudio, said while some 202,000 have enrolled and are now checking the roll or using the SMS roll check service to confirm they are enrolled, some have not.

“We know that some people, even senior leaders, have not gotten themselves enrolled,” Claudio said.

“We don't want one person to miss out. Some people are waiting in their houses or offices for us to knock on their door. This will not happen. It is a much shorter public display of the roll in central locations by Ward Recorders where you need to go and check.

NCD polls: Voters turned away

Many expressed anger at the polling venues at Sabama and Downtown Port Moresby after being turned away by officials.

They told Loop PNG that the final updated electoral roll does not contain their names.

Earlier this week, Electoral Commissioner, Patilias Gamato, announced that the 2012 and the 2017 preliminary roll will be used with the final 2017 roll after many people were turned away in several polling venues around the country.

Gamato allows use of preliminary roll

He said in areas where the bulk of voters do not find their names on the Electoral Roll, the preliminary roll can be used by election officials.

“What I’ve decided is that they can go back and use the preliminary roll,” says the commissioner.

Commissioner Gamato explained that the preliminary roll is the first or draft roll that they did when the enrolment forms came in and data was entered. After the objection, the outcome is the final roll.
