Random road checks in place for motorists in NCD

This is for the nomination and campaign period up until the polling and counting in the capital.

So far, operations have been running smoothly.

Intending candidates are also urged by police to operate in an honest and respectful manner also includes the public to be heedful of their actions during this time.

All operations are in full swing with road blocks and patrols already in motion with a week of nomination and the next eight weeks of campaigning also already underway.

Nominations are slowly coming in for intending candidates who will be contesting the Moresby North West seat, which is currently occupied by Michael Malabag.

During Friday's nominations, the road blocks were set up in a way where vehicles moved in a one way in and one way out manner.

Officers on duty said so far, no major faults or incident in relations to the nominations have occurred.

Police are only controlling traffic at the main market area so supporters share a common a ground to campaign and support their candidates.

Central buai sellers fight off Highlanders

On Monday a fight broke out at Agevairua between a PMV truck from Mekeo and buai buyers who tried to forcefully board the PMV and take out buai bags.

Central police commander Laimo Asi says the Highlanders wanted to force the locals to sell their buai at a discounted price rather than go to the market and sell.

However, the villagers outnumbered the sellers and fought them off.

Police was fast to respond and managed to calm the situation before things got out of hand.

Elderly woman killed in tragic ENB accident

A taxi driver, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, hit her with his vehicle and dragged her body for at least 20 metres, where she died instantly.

The tragedy occurred at Vitabaur village on Saturday, April 15, at around 6.30pm.

“He was driving at high speed without lights,” Provincial police commander Joseph Tabali told Loop PNG.

“The car was swaying from side to side when it hit the elderly pedestrian, dragged her body then overturned.

“Police attended to the scene, removed the body and took it to the Vunapope hospital.”

NCD pre-election operation progressing

Residents in NCD are urged to observe roads blocks and vehicles checks when asked to pull over.

Metropolitan Superintendent Ben Turi confirmed this last week when the operations started and will be moving into Phase Two with the issuing of writs next week.

City residents are to note that during this Easter period as well, NCD police have started putting up roadblocks during the evenings at busy intersections and roundabouts around the city.

Police in the suburbs will be out and about on night patrols in the city to keep the city safe.

Laufa’s case challenging: Police

Traffic Police, Joe Joseph, says the challenge is when you only have a case resting on witness statements.

“We need hard evidence and it is hard to comprehend when there was no one to see and tell of the actual event that had taken place between the suspect and the victim.”

The families, friends and relatives of the Late Ruby are being urged to remain tolerant during this time.

Meanwhile, the suspect involved in the death of the former Miss PNG is yet to be charged as investigations continue.

Criminals hold up woman, escape in car

The woman was said to have parked her car alongside a number of other vehicles at the Ela Murray car park just opposite the church.

Witness Anista Kombri, who is the G4S security guard on duty at the Ela Murray, says after she stepped out of her vehicle (Car Model- ARIA), a blue Mazda pulled up behind her and two men jumped out with what looked to be a homemade gun and a bush knife.

“They pointed it at her and told her to take her child and get out of the car, which the woman did,” says the witness.

Police aware of early campaigning

Northern Divisional Commander, Peter Guinness, has issued a warning to these people, whose identities are known.

"Such campaigns are against law. Their campaign period is after April 20 when the writs are open,” Guinness said.

"This is against the law. You can be arrested and charged.”

Those who are interested to contest the coming National Elections must wait for the writs to open before they start campaigning.

Stockholm truck attack kills 4; arrest made

A dozen people were injured in what appeared to be the latest use of a vehicle as a weapon of terror in Europe.

The Swedish Security Service said the attack happened just before 3 p.m. local time. People were seen fleeing the area in panic.

A beer truck was hijacked as it made a delivery nearby, according to the company that owned it. Eyewitnesses reported it being driven at speed along Drottninggatan (Queen Street) before it crashed into the front of a department store.
