29-year-old Josie Kikoli, who is attached with the downtown Port Moresby Family Sexual Violence Unit, was at the Morata police barracks after a night out with friends when her ex-partner and father of her 18-month-old daughter beat her up until she lost consciousness.

“I have always encouraged women who go through different kinds of violence to report these matters and I have worked on these cases so many times, but when it happened to me, I was lost,” Kikoli revealed.

“It was like a slap in the face.”

The man, identified as Michael James, was working as a deck hand on a Taiwanese fishing boat when he went missing.

He was last seen by a member of the crew on Thursday evening on the deck of the Diamon 2 however, they never realised he was missing until later on in the evening.

Family members of the Gulf man were at the downtown Port Moresby police station yesterday.

An emotional big brother, Aaron James, said they had reported Michael missing on Saturday however, nothing much could be done.

They  were  caught  by MS  11  from  Wabag at around  4.00pm along the Nanonda  Highway.

The MS 11 had been task to conduct police  road blocks  along the highway when they incepted the two suspects.

Assistant Commissioner for Police- Western Command, Martin Lakari said the  suspects  were apprehended have  all  been  detained  at Tari  police  cell  and  refused  bail.

They were formally charged on Wednesday for the alleged offence.

The unlicensed pistol is a Magnum, with Serial number: 1911A2 and is believed to be a US Army issued.

Assistant Commissioner for Police-Human Resource, Sylvester Kalaut, highlighted this during the launch of the constabulary’s reviewed structure to the Department of Personnel Management. 

ACP Kalaut said considering the demands of policing, the size of the force has increased and the structure has remained the same. However, some police stations have not been covered in the structure.

 “With the demand, the size of the constabulary has to expand.”

Led by the NCD Superintendent Operations, Commander Michael Tilae, more than 50 cartons of assorted alcohol were confiscated.

Police say the man, who was identified as one Daniel Katakumb from East Sepik Province, was shot by criminals during a carjacking outside the family residence at Henao Drive.

In a grey Mark-2, the criminals followed the man and his family, who were traveling home in a double cab vehicle.

They then ambushed the family, where three shots were fired.

According to police, the deceased had one visible bullet wound just below his waist.

An investigation has already started while leads are yet to be established.

The Superintendent of operations, Michael Tilae, says this is part of the normal police operations for the city during the Easter season.

The police were out since 3am along the Cross route and helping to hold off traffic as well.

The National Court today ordered the state to pay K97, 272 to Eastern Highlands man Wallan Awaparu after he was injured four years ago at 2 mile hill.

The resident of 2 mile hill settlement suffered permanent loss of vision to his left eye, after he was shot on the morning of 15 March 2014.

He woke up that day to an ethnic clash between Engans and Goilala people and went to investigate the commotion outside his house.

Police arrived in vehicles and fired shots at bystanders. He was shot in the commotion and taken to the Port Moresby General hospital.

It’s been revealed by the suspect that he was moving firearms and was to be picked up by another group in a vehicle which was described by the suspect.

The described vehicle was arranged by a person working for a company.
