On Sunday, at about 3am, a Special Response Unit (SRU) 103 team was on routine patrol along Kamkumung road, in Lae, when they came across about five suspects.

The five suspects came out of Waterloo area and attempted an armed robbery on the patrol unit by blocking the road. 

“They ran away in all directions when they realised it was the Police,” said the Lae metropolitan command.

The other five suspects will be charged with one count of accessory after the fact for each of the 22 charges and one count of harbouring, for a total of 23 charges each.

The 11 suspects were transferred to Port Moresby from Alotau on Wednesday, February 20^th, and are now in police custody. The youngest among the group is 19 years old while the oldest is a 48-year-old man.

National Capital District Metropolitan Chief Superintendent, Perou N’Dranou, said the four suspects allegedly approached the Chinese man while he was sitting inside his vehicle waiting for his wife, who had gone into the market to buy fresh fish.

Two of the suspects walked over to him and the other pointed a homemade gun at the Chinese man’s temple and ordered him to get out of the car. The other suspect opened the passenger side door and pointed another homemade gun at the man.

The three suspects were identified as; Joel Jackson, 30, Kingston Kenny, 30, both from West Sepik Province, and Armstrong Ralda, 21, from Western Highlands Province.

The suspects were wearing Police uniform shirts and were driving a white Toyota double cab bearing registration number CAY 689.

This is according to the daily crime summary provided by the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police and Chief of Operations, Jim Andrews.

The two crimes include one stealing of motor vehicle and one grievous bodily harm.

The mayhem in Alotau is believed to have escalated after police set on fire a house belonging to the parents of one of the gang members, namely Michael Yauwi or better known as Mekere.

The house situated near the police barracks was torched after police believed the house was used by notorious Tommy Baker, Mekere and their gang.

The two bodies were found in the toilet compartment of unit six of the police duplex that was set on fire allegedly by Alotau’s notorious criminal gang leader Tommy Baker and his members. The son was found next to the toilet pot and the mother not far from him, all covered in ashes.

The sad discovery was made early the next morning when PNG Power and the Provincial Works Unit were called in to assess and assist clear the ruins of the burnt houses in the police barracks.

Constable Leo Kambao was dismissed from the Force after being charged for sexual penetration.

He allegedly sexually assaulted an 18-year-old female detainee on January 10^th at the station.

Police Internal Affairs Director Chief Superintendent Robert Ali said Kambao had other outstanding charges going back as far as 2013.

The policeman, 36-year-old First Constable Evara Kivovia, allegedly went home drunk and assaulted his wife.

He also allegedly took out a pistol and discharged the weapon.

The matter was reported and the officer was disarmed and taken into custody.

He was arrested and charged at the Gordons Police Barracks on Thursday for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of firearm whilst drunk, discharging firearm and assault.

Kivovia of Ihu, Kikori, Gulf Province, is attached to the Waigani police station.

Paul Karuka, 21, of Kivori-Kui in Kairuku District of Central Province, is the alleged murderer of James Ikupu, 32, of the same village. Karuka is a year 12 student at Mainohana Secondary School in the Central Province.

It was alleged that on December 22nd, 2018, village youths, including the suspect and victim, were consuming alcohol. The suspect and the victim were cousin brothers. Whilst drinking a fight broke out between the youths and the suspect allegedly murdered the victim.

Karuka went into hiding after he allegedly committed the crime.
