Baki cautions probationary constables

Commissioner for Police, Gari Baki, stressed this during the passing out of the first batch of 2016 recruits yesterday at the Bomana Police Training College.

Baki says this 2017 suspension of recruitment measure was taken to protect the integrity of the Constabulary and to give confidence to all stakeholders.

“As member of the Constabulary, I encourage you to uphold the value of discipline and ethics at all times.”

Police boss congratulates WNB for producing soccer stars

Baki congratulated the four soccer stars during the official opening of the Police Commissioner’s conference in Kimbe on Monday.

“I give credit to WNB also because you had a contingent going to the FIFA Games.

“The young women that came have a different perception of PNG. Before they came, their parents and guardians warned them about PNG but the three weeks they participated in FIFA changed their perception about PNG.

“So credit must also go to our people. On behalf of the police force I also want to say thank you to the people of PNG.

Police called on to improve criminal procedures

He made the statements today after the Committal Court formally dismissed his case on three counts involving allegations that he tried to pervert the course of justice when he consented to a stay application to stop the arrest of Prime Minister Peter O’Neill for official corruption on June 17, 2014.

He said police must improve the Criminal procedures pertaining to Warrants of Arrest so that ordinary citizens can be fairly treated under the Law.

Charges on Damaru stayed

The court stayed the recent charges laid against Damaru.

He was charged for one count of Abuse of Office and Deprivation of Liberty in relation to the arrest of Justice Bernard Sakora.

The Police Commissioner and his servants were also restrained from taking any action against members of the Fraud Squad arising out of or in relation to the arrest of Justice Bernard Sakora until further orders by the court.

These orders were granted after lawyer representing the plaintiffs, McRonald Nale of Jema Lawyers made ex-parte submissions seeking leave to stay the charges.

Commissioner Baki confirms that 23 students injured

   

Four of those students were critically injured, most received injuries as a result of the stampede from the main road at the University while most received injuries from the tear gas fired.

Police Commissioner Gari Baki said there were no students killed as a result of the confrontation.

Speaking to the media in a press conference this afternoon, Baki said: “It is unfortunate that this has happened.

More contempt motions filed against Baki

This time, it was filed by Thomas Eluh, following the recent appointments in the Police Hierarchy and especially over the position of Assistant Police Commissioner Crimes.

Eluh and his lawyers filed the motion yesterday (Tuesday) after an appointment was made for Victor Isouve to that position. Eluh was terminated from office in September last year however that was stayed by the National Court pending a judicial review which is still ongoing in court.

Jema lawyers are expected to serve notices today.

Application to dismiss warrant against govt head adjourned

This is due to a stay order that was issued by the National Court on October 14 by Justice Ere Kariko.

Police Commissioner Gari Baki’s lawyer, Nicholas Tame, moved for the adjournment just after lunch today when the matter returned to court after it was adjourned from September 22.

Tame and Vele’s lawyer Tiffany Twivey both appeared before Magistrate Cosmos Bidar where they agreed to an adjournment to November 26.

Tame said the application before Magistrate Bidar relates to other matters before the National Court.

Fiji Police Commissioner investigated

A report has been lodged alleging the Commissioner of Police, Ben Groenewald had obstructed a police investigation involving a foreign diplomat.

ACP Brown said the investigators are continuing with their work and more details will be released at a later date.

Fijivillage has received confirmation that the report against the Police Commissioner was filed by a member of the public after the accident at Edinburgh Drive on Friday night.
