Trukai praises weightlifters for brilliant performance

As the proud sponsor of the PNG Weightlifting Federation for over 20 years, Trukai Industries celebrated the weightlifters’ victories along with PNG.

Repeating his feats at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, Steven Kari snatched gold in the Men’s 94kg Division and broke the Commonwealth Games Clean and Jerk record in the process.

Dika Toua and Morea Baru were also magnificent in capturing silver in the Women’s 53kg and Men’s 62kg divisions respectively.

Morea Baru sets his eyes on Rio

Morea Baru is not a new name in the PNG sports industry, however, this young Hanuabada lad is about to make a bigger name for himself and the country when he takes centre stage tomorrow (today) at the Oceania Championship in Fiji.

Baru has his eyes set on the 2016 Rio Olympics and there is no doubt of his capabilities.

Trukai Industries General Manager-Sales and Marketing, Andrew Daubney, said:

PNG Weightlifting: Door still open for Steven Kari

PNGWF vice-president Frank Robby said he had gone to Kari’s house last month to inform him of a special invitation from the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) for Kari to attend a one week training program in Nouméa.  Kari refused the invite however.

“Kari was just one of the top weightlifters from all over the Oceania region that were invited to attend the training program.

“I was a bit hurt by his decision but I respect it,” said Robby.

He said Kari is still also under an injury cloud which he made clear was not “weightlifting related”.
