PNG Ports Recruits Cadets

Jemma Paeke, Jeremy Yaul, Shane Gabonen, Janice Semoso, Joseph Steven, Frank Morerei, Nason Dumo, Rayleen Inawasa and Linson Malonga signed their contracts with PNG Ports last week as maritime cadets and commenced their induction this week where they will get to know the business.

Under the maritime cadetship program, the cadets will be fully sponsored by PNG Ports for the duration of their studies at the Maritime College in Madang.

Port Measures Still in Place

The PNG health officials had tested the ship’s crewmembers out at sea and the vessel remains at anchor, offshore, outside Port Moresby.

Managing Director of PNG Ports, Fego Kiniafa confirmed that at no point did the vessel arrive at the Motukea Port, which is owned by PNG Ports Corporation Limited, nor was the vessel handled by PNG Ports or the Pilotage team.

In a statement, Kiniafa said PNG Ports, in its drive to protect its employees, has introduced stringent preventative measures at all its ports, since January 2020, in line with the ‘Niupela Pasin’.

PNG Ports records K77m profit

This was announced by Board Chairman, Kepas Wali, when declaring the unaudited annual financial results for 2019.

Chairman Wali said the outstanding performance recorded in 2019 is a result of the collaborated effort by the Board and Management in ensuring sound business decisions and prudent cost control.

Government queries status of Lae Port Operation

Minister for National Planning and Acting Minister for State Enterprise and Public Investment, Charles Abel, said this during the week.

Abel said it has always been Governments intention to have a reputable firm manage the Lae Port.

“The Governments intention is to have an international operator come in and utilise that port and generate internationally competitive container movement rates and cordage rates and clearance through that port.

PNG Ports to relocate office

As of February 20th, PNG Ports will be operating out of Credit Corporation Building in Downtown.

A public notice authorised by Acting Managing Director, Stanley Alphonse, states all functions at its former head office along the Stanley Esplanade at Downtown will come to end.

PNGPC says Container Terminal will continue to operate in its current location while Port Operations has already been relocated to Motukea.

SOEs do not pay enough dividends, says Pruaitch

Minister Pruaitch made this comment yesterday after the launch of the Asian Development Bank Pacific Private Sector Development Initiative (PSDI) report titled; Finding Balance 2016 Report on Performance of State-owned Enterprises in Pacific Island countries.

“The Government is borrowing so much to fund State-Owned Enterprises, and we need a policy on dividends payment,” he said.

ENB government looks into landowners concerns

Disgruntled landowners took to the street of Rabaul town last Thursday closing down all port facilities, including the main entrance to the PNG Ports gate.

Acting Provincial Administrator for East New Britain, Wilson Matava, had gone to the landowners paying an amount of traditional shell money (tabu) to negotiate for the port gates to be re-opened of which Vanmark shipping at Atham Wharf and the PNG Ports Services were reopened soon after.

PNG Ports seeks talks on controversial tender

This comes after Port Moresby port workers went on strike calling for the government to re look at the tender process of awarding stevedoring businesses in two of the nation’s busiest ports.

PNG Ports maintains that all avenues of negotiations with Steamships and its landowner partners to accommodate their interests have not been exhausted.

Consultations and negotiations will start late this month with a view towards structuring “a mutually beneficial outcome’’.
