PNG Olympic Committee (PNGOC)

With less than 100 days left, the PNGOC Secretary General, Auvita Rapilla said the endorsed sports are Athletics, Boxing, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis and Weightlifting.

“Of these sports, four athletes have qualified under the Regional Qualification Process confirmed by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). They include Weightlifting’s Dika Toua and Morea Baru and Table Tennis’s Geoffrey Loi and Tammy Agari as announced earlier this month,” said Rapilla.

Coral Sea Hotels have continued a long-standing arrangement with the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC), to provide accommodation and venue assistance to support the PNGOC with its preparation of athletes for major sporting events. 

According to Coral Sea Hotels’ Senior Vice President & Group General Manager, Peter Laigaard Jensen, the hotel group has been a long-term supporter of the sporting ambitions of PNG, through the support of PNGOC.

The K150,000 is an annual commitment by SP Brewery, as part of the brewery’s three-year sponsorship to the PNGOC.

SP Brewery Managing Director, Ed Weggemans said: “Even though we are dealing with trade restrictions and loss of business, SPB is proud to continue our support to Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee for another year.”

This support go towards helping Team PNG participate in the Northern Marianas Mini Pacific Games in Saipan from June 17the - 25^th, and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games from the 28th of July to the 8th of August 2022.

The two notable games slated to be held in 2022 is the one-year delayed (from 2021) Pacific Mini Games in Saipan, Northern Marianas scheduled from June 17th – 25, while the iconic celebration of sport to embrace the Commonwealth values of humanity, equality and destiny is scheduled from July 28 to August 8th. 

One of the major fundraising events organized by PNGOC is the annual Prime Ministers Corporate Golf Challenge. The first event will be held in Lae on Friday 08th April at the Lae Golf Club and in Port Moresby on April 22 Port Moresby Golf Club.

Being the PNGOC’s largest fundraising event for the Team PNG, funds raised go towards helping Team PNG to the 2022 Saipan Pacific Mini Games in the Northern Marianas in June and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom in July. 

Trukai Industries Chief Executive Officer, Allan Preston when commenting on this partnership said Trukai has been the major sponsor of the Fun Run since 2000 marking its 22^nd year.

While the endorsement of the final team is pending, the top management for Team PNG has been appointed. The JC is the committee under the PNG Olympic Committee (PNGOC) that deliberates and endorses sports and their top athletes to take part as Team PNG in the Olympics, Commonwealth and Pacific Games.

Targeted sports that will represent Papua New Guinea at the 2022 Pacific Mini Games in Saipan, Northern Mariana Island, scheduled for June 17^th to 25^th 2022 are Athletics, Beach Volleyball, Golf, Tennis, Va’a and weightlifting.

The East Sepik Province will host the Queen’s Baton when it arrives in the country.

Governor for East Sepik Allan Bird joined PNGOC President Sir John Dawanincura, and Secretary General Auvita Rapilla, in making the announcement.

The Queens Baton for the 2022 Commonwealth Games is currently making its way to Papua New Guinea from Asia.

PNG will be the first Country to receive the Baton in the Oceania Region.

Last year only four national federations received a boost towards preparing for the Games after being allocated funding under Team PNG’s Performance Strategy.

Athletics, Basketball, Boxing and Va’a were the first to receive funding last year, which includes providing equipment-funding other NFs are urged to apply for funding, especially with 2023 Pacific Games just around the corner.  

Funding available is to help support national federations host their national tournaments and selections for upcoming internationals meets. 

The PNG Olympic Committee (PNGOC) recently announced the first batch of funding support to these federations under Team PNG Performance Strategy.

With just under two years to the Solomon Islands 2023 Pacific Games, athletes, teams and their coaches are already preparing to ensure they are at peak level come the opening ceremony on 19th November 2023.

Sport is one of the most powerful platforms for promoting gender equality and in empowering women and girls.

Since 2016 - 2020 there has been a 60% female representation on the PNGOC Board. As of 2020 that number is currently on 40%. Within the organisation itself, 60% of employed staff comprise of women headed by the Secretary General Mrs Auvita Rapilla, who is also PNG and the Pacific's first female International Olympic Committee (IOC) Member and sits on four IOC Commissions.
