PNG Musik Awards

Coca-Cola supports Musik Awards

Its signature platform launched recently in the country is the Coke studio; bringing together artists from different genres, eras and regions.

Now getting on board as the major sponsor for the PNG Musik Awards, Coca-Cola is bringing a number of these artists to perform at PNG’s biggest music event.

The Musik Awards is another opportunity for these artists, some of whom are from underground genres, not widely known by the PNG audience.

Planet Native, a hip-hop group, is one of such and has been selected to perform at the event as the night opener.

Musik awards set for this weekend

It’s on again this year – the 14th YUMI FM PNG Musik awards.

A press conference was held this afternoon to announce formalities of the night, set for Saturday, April 28.

The music awards is the country’s biggest music event, recognising efforts of local and regional artists annually.

To do things better, this year’s awards is bringing back the Female Artists of the Year category and introducing a new category – the international Artist of the Year.

Long way to go for PNG female artists

Even 13 years after introducing the PNG Musik Awards to empower all artists, founding member and radio personality, Kasty still sees this as an issue.

“There are quite a number of female artists in the industry, who are talented vocalists and performers as well as gifted songwriters but they often lack the confidence,” he said.

The challenge each year is to have more females taking part in the industry.

PNG Musik Awards locked in for weekend

However, the YumiFM PNG Musik Awards is the only event of its scale, to do so.

It was introduced in 2005 when the management of the radio station saw the short fall in this area.

To date, YumiFM Radio personality tuner “Kasty” says there is still no proper music industry or government support.

For the last 13 years, together with willing sponsors, PNGFM has been staging the YumiFM PNG Musik Awards to recognise artists’ contribution.
