Muthuvel wants assurance on PNG Games

Questioning the Minister for Sports and National Events Justin Tkatchenko today in Parliament, Muthuvel asked the Minister to explain how prepared the government is towards the PNG Games.

“What is the preparedness for PNG Games as it is a national event and not a provincial event that’s why it is called PNG Games.

“Considering the national elections next year, what is the assurance that the Government has to implement the PNG Games in West New Britain?” he asked.

All –weather athletics track nears completion for Games

The synthetic running surface was laid this week and only needs the finishing coat and line markings.

Athletics PNG President Tony Green who visited the site on Monday said the Contractors have done a great job and the track will be the Pride of West New Britain.

“It’s a great venue “ he said and the work is of a very high standard, similar to the track laid in Port Moresby for the Pacific Games last year.

PNG Games deferred to March 2017

This was because the PNG Games Council together with the National Government have decided that the FIFA U20 Women’s World World Cup, as a global event should take prominence.

"The World Cup needs to be given a standing ovation by itself to promote it and we need to ensure that the world sees Papua New Guinea," Minister Tkatchenko said.

Adding that hosting two events at the same time the PNG Games and the FIFA World Cup may allow us to lose track on of the World Cup as well as the PNG Games.

Madang Boxing Team set for PNG Games

The tournament saw Boxers from Ramu Sugar Kickboxing Association challenging the Madang Kickboxing Association to make the final selection.

Madang Provincial Community Development Assistant Director Joe Bande who is in charge of Team Madang was there to witness the fights and present the thropies and medals to the winners.

Bande said the tournament is the final one, and after that the selected boxers will go into training in preparation for the 7th PNG Games in Kimbe.

“The boxers took part in 53kg, 54kg, 55kg, 59kg, 60kg, 62kg and 65kg division,”

WNB prepares to host PNG Games in November

Contractor Nivani Limited have started late last year clearing areas selected for the games, which will be Kulungi, Kapore, Hoskins as satellite venues while the main stadium will be at Kimbe town.

Construction work on the ground at this time involves levelling, drainage, fencing and stadium construction.

The stadium will hold a capacity of 3500 people and is now the main focus of the contractor to complete.

Nivani Limited has 7 months to complete all works. 

Team Sepik steps up for Kimbe PNG Games

Prior to the provincial games held in November last year, the team had identified a number of potential players and is now ready to reduce their numbers to travel.

East Sepik Grass Roots Games Chairman Clarence Hukahu told PNG Loop they will have three stages of trimming which will coincide with the school holidays.

“Many of our potential reps are students, who are going to participate in the trial games. That is why we will have the squad trial matches during the three school term breaks to finalise our travel squad,” Hukahu said.

Notice Boards go up for PNG Games

The notice boards will contain public draws, game fixtures, timings and other sporting events for the upcoming PNG games tournament.

This contract awarded through the WNB Technical Services Department was awarded to Uvanta Construction, a locally based firm.

It is not immediately known how much the contrails worth.

Kimbe has begun preparation for the PNG Games later in the year.

Madang to commence Provincial Games

The Sports Office under the Community Development Department is working around the clock to ensure its all systems go from January 26 to the 29th.

Provincial Sports Officer Robin Hevesa said the four day tournament will see the six districts compete against each other in various codes.

Districts sports officers have been lodging team numbers in preparation for the tournament.

 “Teams will take part in soccer, volleyball, basketball, karate, kickboxing, dart and touch rugby,” he said.
