PNG Barramundis

Everyday People: Jason Kila

It’s been helping me to stay disciplined. And I’ve grown.

Cricket has taught me how to be professional off the field as well.

Like my other teammates, family played a big part in the sport.

As a little boy growing up in Hula, Central Province, I always watched my uncle, Vavine Pala’s cricket games.

Pala, one of PNG’s pioneer cricketers, featured in the first ICC Trophy tournament in 1979.

Barras members lose parents

Nosaina Pokana, CJ Amini and Kipling Doriga all lost a parent.

Nosaina lost his father, Ricky Pokana, CJ lost his mother, Kunemo Rupa Amini, and Kipling lost his mother, Naomi Doriga.

The board, management, staff of Cricket PNG and members of the PNG national cricket teams expressed their deepest condolences and sympathies to the Pokana, Amini and Doriga families.

“Loss of a parent at any time is hard to come to terms with,” said Cricket PNG.

Everyday People: Charles Jordan "CJ" Amini

It’s been a long journey.

I’m 29 now and I’m confident that my team, the Kumul Petroleum PNG Barramundis, are ready for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after a solid preparation at home.

We’ll be going in as underdogs in the October tournament because Oman have home advantage and Scotland have been there before. This will be our first time.

But it would be an opportune time to learn from the whole experience.

Everyday People: Norman Vanua

Travelling the world with the PNG Barramundis, I get to experience different cultures and understand the way people live.

We also get a chance to showcase what PNG is, not just through cricket but through our cultures as well.

Growing up in a family of cricket players, I quite naturally conditioned myself to the sport, ultimately making it my career.

The sport has given me so much.

Last Ball Thriller

In a day that culminated in the official announcement of the ICC T20 World Cup Barras squad, the final was a fitting entree.

Vala won the toss and elected to send the Legends into bat with the decision paying dividends immediately as Ura was dismissed by Bobby Diho without scoring. CJ Amini (5) was the next to go before L Siaka (14) and S Bau (16) put on a steadying partnership.

PNG Barras’ qualifier tour ends

The PNG side went down to the more expierenced Netherlands in the final in the early hours of Sunday morning Port Moresby time.

After already securing their T20 World Cup participation in Australia next next year, they entered the Qualifier finals series, looking to prove themselves further and leave Dubai as the trophy holders. They faced the powerful Namibian side in the semi-final on Saturday, who easily  accounted for Pool B runners up Oman in their play off final, forcing Oman into sudden death against Hong Kong for the final World Cup spot.

Hard work pays off

With over 100 countries playing cricket around the world of differing economic, social and geographical backgrounds, it is a monumental achievement by the Barras to reach the top echelon in world cricket.

Cricket PNG says this success justifies the investment that their organisation has put into their sport and the vision by their leaders to formulate a plan for success and to follow it through. They have attracted the right people in the likes of CEO Greg Campbell and Coach Joe Dawes who, with their expertise and passion for cricket, have delivered PNG to the world stage.

Barras go down against Hong Kong

Hong Kong batted first and set a mammoth target of 269 for the Barras to chase for victory.

Barras started well knocking off Hong Kong openers cheaply off consecutive balls after deciding to bat, but a 78-run third-wicket stand from skipper  Babar Hayat and Nizakat Khan got them back on track to end the overs at  6 for 269.

Chad Soper was the Barras’ best bowler, finishing with 3/39.

Barras continues win at SACCA

Chasing a modest target of 197 set by the Eastern Edge, Barramundis cruised to a comfortable victory on the back of an 86-run third-wicket partnership between Assad Vala (51) and Lega Siaka (50).

Vani Vagi Morea (38) was the other major contributor with the bat for the Barramundis, while Tyrell Sinclair (3/45) and David Grant (2/42) were the pick of the Eastern Edge bowlers.

Barramundis lost three (3) late wickets, but still managed to win by four (4) wickets with over eleven (11) overs to spare.
