Activists say fight is far from over

In thanking the members of the public that showed up at Unagi Oval on Monday, chairman of the PNG Anti-Corruption Movement for Change Lucas Kiap said people cannot be suppressed despite threats and intimidation being used on them.

Kiap says despite the police turning up early Monday morning at Unagi Oval to order protestors to leave, confrontation was avoided by the leaders who instead called to meet with the Police Commissioner, his deputies and NCD Metropolitan police Commander Supt Ben Turi.

Activists say to protest, not march

Chairman of the PNG Anti-Corruption Movement for Change Lucas Kiap told Loop PNG that the arrangement will be for a protest gathering to be held at the Unagi oval in Port Moresby.

A letter was given to the metropolitan police commander’s office today (Thursday) requesting for police presence and clearance for the event.

Kiap says that supporters are asked to arrive by 9am and take up position at the Unagi oval area.

Meantime, NCD metropolitan police Commander Ben Turi is yet to officially approve the protest gathering.

Citizens called on to protest next Monday

They are also reiterating calls for a nationwide stop work on Monday, May 9th.

Chairman of PNG Anti-Corruption Movement for Change Lucas Kiap told Loop PNG that the civil society groups are of the view that the Prime Minister is undermining the laws and institutions which give meaning to the existence of this country.

Kiap outlined that the economy of the country has also shown no improvement with the recent severe foreign currency shortages, affecting businesses, forcing them to lay off workers.
