Ryan Pini to swim this afternoon

Pini will race at 2:16pm Rio time (3:16am PNG time, Friday) and will swim in heat 2 of 6 of the butterfly event.

The world record for the 100 metres butterfly is held by Michael Phelps from the United States who set a time of 49.82 seconds back in 2009 in Rome, Italy.

Pini will be the fourth athlete from Team PNG to compete at Rio after Raymond Ovinou, Thadius Katua and Morea Baru.

The news was announced today by Chef de Mission, Emma Waiwai at the farewell for Team PNG at the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre, Port Moresby.

Waiwai described Pini as a great ambassador for sports in PNG saying he is the only PNG athlete to compete in the finals at an Olympic Games.

“Ryan is well recognized in PNG and the Pacific. Among many other achievements and awards include Member of the British Empire, Order of the Logohu, Best Male Athlete of the 2015 Pacific Games and winning the SP Sports Awards Male Athlete of the Year five times.
