Pearce was not selected for the 2016 series defeat, as he sought to overcome a number of personal issues, but Sterling believes he can help turn NSW's fortunes around.
"I think if Mitchell Pearce starts the season well, as I expect him to, he'll be top of the list," Sterling told Seven News.
The Channel Nine and Triple M pundit will serve as a sounding board for Blues coach Laurie Daley and sees an end Queensland's dominance in 2017.
"Everything is in place for success and I am extremely optimistic that some really good times are coming," Sterling said.
