O’Neill congratulates all members-elect

In a statement this afternoon, O’Neill thanked the business community and people around the Nation for their patience during the election, and said he anticipates a post-election increase in economic activity after Parliament resumes.

“I congratulate all Members-elect on their declarations,” the he said.

“Regardless of whether you join us in Government, or sit on the opposition benches, you have already made a great achievement.  Your provinces and districts have elected you to represent them in the Tenth Parliament of Papua New Guinea.

Members must deliver to ensure real change for their people

Returning to Port Moresby from his district on Sunday, the incumbent Prime Minister and newly elected member for Ialibu-Pangia said the voices of the nation have been loud and clear in this election, particularly in his district.

In the space of four elections, support for Peter O’Neill in Ialibu-Pangia has grown from 18,000 votes in 2002, to 25,000 votes in 2007, 44,000 votes in 2012 to now almost 49,000 votes in 2017, which is 78 per cent of the nearly 63,000 votes cast.

This is Mr O'Neill's fourth term to be elected as the MP for Ialibu Pangia.

After count 115 O'Neill collected 48714 votes to be declared.

Officially declaring him is Ialibu Pangia Returning Officer Michael Ariando in the presence of counting officials, scrutineers and supporters.

O'Neill has gone past the 50% +1 absolute majority with a surplus of more than 17,000 votes.

PM: Don’t make me stubborn over building infrastructure!

O’Neill made this statement today when officially opening the Sir Reuben Taureka Highway along the Six-Mile to Bautama turn-off in the Central Province.

He said his government has been criticised for building infrastructure in the nation’s capital lately.

However, he said those criticisms are mere talk to get political gain.

“Criticisms are sometimes very healthy when its constructive criticism and not unnecessary criticisms.

“When you do such criticisms that is not constructive, you are simply making me stubborn.

PM O’Neill: National Alliance’s decision to leave was expected

“That is not unexpected, their mind and soul were already out of government, now the body is following,” O’Neill told Loop PNG.   

He was responding to questions from this newsroom about the decision reached by NA Party’s executives and parliamentary wing to leave the O’Neill –Dion Coalition Government. 

The decision was announced by the National Alliance Party Caucus in Port Moresby today.

PNC and NA party marriage seems to be over

This is the fourth week for campaigning and candidates and parties will be looking at marketing themselves to the voters.

PNG Electoral Commission stated earlier that 3,332 candidates will contest for the 22 Provincial and 89 Open seats in the Papua New Guinea’s 111 seat Parliament.

The eight weeks of campaign will end on June 23, followed by the two weeks of polls.

Meanwhile, the political marriage between the two largest parties in the coalition government is coming to an end.

The country is into the second week of the National Election campaign period.  

O’Neill is the parliamentary leader for the ruling People’s National Congress Party, while Polye heads the Triumph Heritage Empowerment Party.

Both parties are going into the election with over 90 endorsed candidates, with the aim to form the next government in July.  

PNC has 93 candidates while THE party has 90 candidates contesting for the 111 seats in Parliament.

Ijivitari MP David Arore said the prime minister will open the Popondetta Hospital theatre ward today.

O’Neill boasts about building many roads

“In 2012, when we took office only 23 per cent of all our roads (national highways) in the country were said to be in a good condition; today, I can tell you that over 50 per cent of roads in the country are classified as in good condition,” O’Neill said during the launching of PNC campaign for the election today in Port Moresby.   

“We (PNC led government) have rebuilt over 3,000km of roads throughout the country, but we have further 10, 000km we have to attend to, these are key major roads linking all our towns, cities and districts.”

PNC will continue to grow economy: O’Neill

Prime Minister and PNC parliamentarian leader, Peter O’Neill made this statement when launching his party’s election campaign in Port Moresby today.

PNC have endorsed 93 candidates to run for the 111 seats in the National Parliament, over 60 of them are current Members of Parliament.    

O’Neill said all countries in the world borrow money to support their economy, and PNG is likewise.  

 “We are borrowing money to build infrastructures that will grow the economy of the country.
