PNG Lewas beat Vanuatu by 55 runs

The Lewas went in to bat first, setting up a target of 139. They batted out the full 20 overs losing 8 wickets.

Openers Norma Ovasuru (33) and Varoi Morea (21) put on a 54 run partnership to get things going.

Other notable contributions came from Helen Buruka (22) and Tanya Ruma (20). Vanuatu’s Jelany Chilia was the top bowler, finishing with figures of 2/20.

In their response, Vanuatu got off to a bad start by losing their opening four wickets for only 20 runs.

Tiny FSM weighs in with 2 gold

Meanwhile, PNG weightlifter Fred Oala came third in the clean and jerk, winning bronze.

Representing the Federated State of Micronesia (FSM), Minginfel came first in the snatch and overall total. The snatch winning lift was 120kg and the total combined weight for gold was 276kg.

The clean and jerk gold medal was won byTevita Tawai with a 157kg lift.

Meanwhile,the next weightlifting finals for today will be the women's 58kg division. 

PNG lead Kiribati 12-1 at break

PNG’s try scoring machine Marie Max got them going in the first minute and the touchdowns continued to pile on with other points scored by Mariah Alu, Grace Kouba and Jenny Carol.

Kiribati showed some class to grab a touchdown and register their first point before the break.

Lifter gives Micronesia 1st gold

The 69kg Pacific life and snatch winner took the big prize with a 120kg lift, as the last man standing.

Meanwhile, Patrick Pasia grabbed silver for Samoa with a lift of 116kg and the bronze went to Stevick Patris of Palau with a 115kg lift.

The best of the Papua New Guineans was Frank Oala with a 110kg lift. The clean and jerk challenge in the same weight division will start soon.

7 PNG swimmers qualify for finals

They're “Super Fish’’  Ryan Pini, Sam Seghers, Britney Murray, Anna-Liza Mopio-Jane, Savannah Tkatchenko, Ryan Maskelyne and Ashley Seeto.

Pini finished with the fastest time, clocking in first in 26.22 sec in the 50m freestyle.

Also in the men’s 200m freestyle, Seghers finished the fastest, recording 1:54:58 sec.

In the 100m men’s breaststroke, Maskelyne finished 4th in a time of 1:06:17 sec and Seeto finished 5th after clocking in at 1:07:87 sec.

PNG go down to Tahiti in women's basketball

Despite the home ground advantage, the Tahitians were too fast with their footwork leading throughout the match.

In the first quarter, Tahiti took the lead by six points however the scoreline extended in the second quarter by 20 points, taking Tahiti's score to  45-25.

Despite aggressive play by home girl Betty Angula and the home crowd on their side, the Tahitians remained fearless and held the lead.

In the third quarter, PNG struggled to close the gap with the score 65-37.

Tahiti maintained their lead in the final quarter, finishing 90-57 at full time.

PNG men’s win 5 in a row

The PNG boys doubled the tempo in the second half of play with 9 touch downs scored. Simon Kora David led the way picking up four touch downs.

This is PNG’s fifth win in a row.

PNG will play their last match this afternoon against Tonga. Finals will start tomorrow.

Both men’s and women’s teams from PNG lead the competition with no losses so far.

Ryan Pini qualifies for finals

Pini clocked in the fastest time of 26.22 sec.

Nathan Nades failed to qualify after finishing third.

Peter Pokawin also didn't qualify after finishing 4th, clocking in at 30.24 sec.

The fastest 8 times have qualified for the finals. 

Ryan Pini heads PNG swimmers into pool

PNG super fish Ryan Pini hits the pool today in day 1 of swimming at the 15th Pacific Games.

Pini will compete in the 50m backstroke alongside team mates Nathan Nades and Peter Pokawin.

Three other events will also take place. The 100m freestyle will see Anna-Lisa Mopio-Jane, Savannah Tkatchenko and Barbara Vali-Skelton compete.

The 200m freestyle will see Sam Seghers, Stanford Kawale and Bobby Akunaii heading up and down the pool. 

PNG theme song gets K40 000 boost

The sponsorship was presented yesterday by the National Development Bank to the Management Company Kamuna Consultancy.

Kamuna Consultancy are the managers for the group who will sing the theme song and produce the video which will incorporate young talented artists from all over the country.

The theme song is titled ‘I Am, You Are, We Are PNG, Together We Can’ and was written by local award winning artist Jagarizzar, sung by Jamie Lee and Jagarizzar and is written in English.
