Polye to sell Oil Search shares to fund autonomy plans

Speaking in Kokopo, East New Britain, during the Triumph Heritage Empowerment Party campaign launching on Saturday Polye announced the ambitious plan.

He said the actions would be taken if THE Party forms the next Government.

Polye promised ENB autonomy and claimed that other provinces such as Eastern Highlands, Western, Milne Bay and West New Britain were also ready for autonomy.

It was then taken to the NCDC City Hall.

The following day it continued with visits to the Motuan villages of Porebada and Hanuabada where former PNG Kumul players joined in the festivities. 

NEC approves call-out for PNGDF in Hela Province

“These problems have the potential to impact on the upcoming election as well as the operation of important projects in the area.

“Cabinet has approved a call-out the PNGDF to support Police to conduct security operations in Hela Province.

“Police will have full powers to ensure law and order and to deal with people who seek to cause trouble.

“This includes the immediate arrest of people seeking to initiate violent acts or make threats against Government officials or projects in the province.

Oil Search and Mapai sponsor Lae Daffodil Golf Challenge

The event was launched with a K50,000 sponsorship from foundation sponsor Oil Search Limited (K25,000) and Lae-based Mapai Transport Limited (K25,000).

This is the sixth year that the event will be hosted to support the work of the PNG Cancer Relief Society in Lae.

The corporate challenge will be held in Lae on August 19th.

Oil Search PNG communications manager, Ruth Waram, said the sponsorship covers the hosting of the event, whilst 100 percent of the funds raised from the  event will go directly to the PNG Cancer Relief Society to assist their work. 

Oil Search staff donate blood

“I imagined myself lying in hospital in need of blood and there wasn’t a single bag available,” said Ms Kilip, a first-time donor and Oil Search’s Government Affairs Advisor.

“I plan on donating blood again in three months as there are associated health benefits as well.”

Noel Tomdia, a regular blood donor and an Inventory Controller at Oil Search, feels strongly that one should always take the opportunity to save a life when it presents itself. “I have made a pledge to donate blood every time I am able to.”

Opposition calls on Govt to sell OSH shares

Opposition Leader Don Polye in a  media  conference yesterday said the UBS loan  and other commercial loans are liabilities to the state and must be addressed as a matter of urgency.

He said this single loan engagement, K3 billion UBS loan was a big mistake that impacts badly on PNG’s economy today during a global economic recession, creating a domestic economic crisis and fiscal operation nightmare.

National Stadium opens next month

Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko says the facility is in its last stages of completion and will be fully functional by February to host its first rugby league match where the Prime Minister will do the official kick off.  

The K170 million infrastructure is constructed by Leighton PNG with seating for up to 15,000 spectators.

The seating area for the north, south and eastern stands are completed, seating a total of 10,000 people.

The main grand stand has 3184 seats and is half completed with the roofing already installed and a few more seats to be fitted in.

Distressed yachtsman rescued

This would have seemed like a normal, everyday occurrence, but it was actually the final stages of a 27-hour long rescue operation of solo yachtsman, Moritz Herrmann, by the crew on board the vessel, which is contracted to Oil Search. 

The 73-year old yachtsman appeared quite exhausted on arrival but was extremely grateful to be safe on land following a “horrible ordeal” out at sea after losing his rudder.  

“To lose your rudder and to be unable to steer in rough seas is just horrible,” said Herrmann, who sailed out of Port Moresby for Thursday Island a week ago.
