Newmont Corporation takes over Newcrest operations

During the joint press conference on 6 November 2023 Chief Development Officer of Newmont, Peter Toth and Prime Minister James Marape welcomed the company.

PM Marape shared the significance of this corporate transaction as Newmont assumes control of all Newcrest operations in Papua New Guinea including the Lihir mine in New Ireland and the Wafi-Golpu project in Morobe.

"It adds value to Papua New Guinea's global branding as an investment destination. What this country effectively has now is the world's number one gold company”, said Marape.

These issues were raised in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by tenement landholders, relocated family groups and surrounding communities in December 21, 2020.

The parties involved in this collaboration include the New Ireland Provincial Government, the Namatanai District Administration, Nimamar Local Level Government, as well as the United and Catholic Churches (who are also Tenement landholders).

PNG Air maintains gold safety registration

This follows a recent renewal audit.

BARS was developed by mining resource companies and the Flight Safety Foundation to establish a common safety audit standard for suppliers of aviation services to the resource industry.

It provides industry companies with the level of safety assurance they require, measured against very stringent standards.

Only eight audit companies worldwide are approved to perform BARS audits.
