Gagai joined the Knights in 2012 and has played 116 of his 122 NRL matches for Newcastle.

Gagai informed his teammates before joining the Queensland Maroons side in camp on Monday.

"We are obviously disappointed that Dane has decided to leave the Club, but we respect the decision he has made with his family," CEO Matt Gidley said.

"Dane has been a wonderful player and ambassador for our club over the six years he has been with us.

"He will leave at season's end with our best wishes for the future."

Knights halfback Jaelen Feeney had found some open space immediately after the break and threw inside for Brock Lamb, but referee David Munro ruled the pass forward.

After a dominant 14-0 display in the opening half, the Novocastrians fell away on the back of a high error rate in the second term and further 50-50 calls going the visitors' way throughout the remainder of the game.

Newcastle were by far the better side for the opening 39 minutes and should have gone to the sheds with a healthy lead, only to shoot themselves in the foot in the shadows of half-time to allow the Bulldogs to get back into the contest. 

For the second week in a row, Brown's troops found themselves trailing 18-6 against experienced opposition, only to fight their way back into the arm wrestle to set up a grandstand finish.

CEO Todd Greenberg said fines totalling $350,000 had been imposed on the Gold Coast Titans, St George Illawarra Dragons and Newcastle Knights.

He said that, following consideration of submissions from each club, the penalties would be: 

   o Gold Coast Titans $50,000 (with a further $100,000 suspended) for incidents involving Kane Elgey and Ryan Simpkins

   o St George Illawarra Dragons $50,000 (with a further $50,000 suspended) for an incident involving Josh Dugan

The home side looked in control of the match when they held a 12-point lead with 11 minutes to go, before tries to Knights outside backs Brendan Elliot and Jacob Gagan got the visitors level at 18-all with seven minutes left.

Cronulla have started the year 2-2 and know they can't afford a slip up at this stage of the season given the Storm and Roosters have already jumped two wins clear after the first four rounds. 

While it would be easy to have one eye on the game down in Melbourne, back-rower Wade Graham said that wasn't the case.

 Winger Ross suffered a potentially serious ankle injury when his left ankle was folded under him in a first-half tackle against the Rabbitohs in Round 3. He stayed on but the injury deteriorated throughout the game.

However the club lost fullback Brendan Elliott and back-rower Sione Mata'utia (who is also the player generally used as a centre to plug mid-game backline injuries) to concussions, forcing Ross to finish the match.

In a seesawing affair that produced everything, the Knights received a gift with six minutes left on the clock when Titans playmaker Tyrone Roberts kicked the ball out on the full to hand possession over to his former side. 

The embattled club, who were staring down the barrel of 20 consecutive defeats, took advantage with Knights skipper Trent Hodkinson delivering a clutch pass on the inside for Peter Mata'utia to barge his way over for the match-winner.

Zillman failed to train on Wednesday with a calf complaint and was not sighted when the team took to the field on Friday morning, Roberts-Davis slotting in on the left wing in what would appear to be a straight swap.
