The village, consisting of three areas, gathered residents to participate in the program.

The curfew aims to restrict drunk and disorderly behaviour.

Many young men and a few women are volunteering to run the curfews, which include roadblocks for vehicle checking.

The 8pm shift is run by children under 16 years of age while the midnight shift is for older people.

Deputy Chairman of the Vabukori Village Court, Michael Ikavape, said this is a first of its kind in the community and has so far brought peace during the festive period.

The festive period operations began a month ago and according to Police, residents of Port Moresby have maintained peace.

Three main road blocks have been set up to achieve their plan of bringing a peaceful festive season.

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent, Perou N’Dranou, said with the record of this year’s operations, he is happy the city is responding to their message of adhering to law and order.

Superintendent N’Dranou also said they have successfully completed the second phase of the operations and will be completing the next phase.

The roadblock begins in front of the Sabama market all the way to Mahuru.

The road was closed after an eviction notice had been served on a local woman living at the junction of Sabama-Pari intersection, to vacate her premises to allow for the road development to continue through.

There are also fears that the rest of the homes within the sphere of the road development may be removed, forcing locals to close the road until a proper explanation.

The numbers are expected to increase in all clinics in the coming days.

He was speaking in relation to the recent criminal attacks at the 2018 Fun Run event in Port Moresby.

N’Dranou said organisers of big events should not always be blamed for the misdemeanour of the few youths that cause trouble.

He said while leaders try their best to keep these youths in line, it is always an attitude problem.

The NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Commander said with a huge manpower problem in the force, police cannot be at all places at once.

Commander Michael Tilae warned however that the villagers have two options: To either lift the ban or allow for the police to come in and carry out community policing.

Tilae says the forum they hold needs to emphasise that police will not come in light-handed.

He said that the people need to take responsibility but also note that the police will need to carry out their duties diligently.

However, illegal vending and the use of the area underneath the flyover have given rise to criminal and other illegal activities.

The National Capital District Commission says the area under the flyover is now out of bound and penalties will be imposed to intruders.

NCDC Regulatory Services and City Manager Bernard Kipit say effective as of March 22nd, all vending and commuting under the area beneath the Kumul Flyover must be stopped.
