Disaster offices told not to work in isolation

Acting Director of the National Disaster Centre (NDC), Lusete Mana made the call last Friday at the closing of a weeklong provincial disaster coordinators conference in Port Moresby.

He said two key issues raised in the recent and most conferences are financial and manpower constraints. 

Mr Mana said the two same issues are always raised during conferences however, solutions must be found to address these issues.

“The challenge is on us to send situation reports and keep in constant communication with our provincial administrators.

Training of Trainer for Disaster Risk Assessment

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in partnership with the NDC, and the technical support of the PNG Red Cross Society (PNGRCS) delivered the national Training of Trainer (ToT) on Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) and Build Back Safer (BBS) in Shelter Construction.  

The training is funded by USAID's Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (USAID-BHA) and delivered in Port Moresby from 06-10 September 2021.

Workshops preparing provinces for disasters

The program is being conducted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Disaster Centre (NDC).

The workshops are part of the ‘Strengthening Disaster Risk Management in Papua New Guinea’ program, funded by the Australian Government, which is providing strategic support to the Government of Papua New Guinea in reducing vulnerability and increasing resilience to disasters.

According to the UNDP and NDC, Papua New Guinea is prone to regular natural disasters and faces threats from a wide range of hazards including floods, cyclones, landslides, drought and earthquakes, among others.
