Officials attacked, ballot papers burnt

Frustration started mounting when voters found out that their names were not on the electoral roll.

Hundreds of residents turned on the counting officials, who ran away for fear of their safety.

The crowd then grabbed the election materials, smashed ballot boxes and burnt the ballot papers.

An eyewitness told this newsroom that a tractor was also burnt while the Electoral Commission container was ransacked.

Pilot rural student accommodation

The department’s executive manager from the project implementation division said they only started in 2016 when funding was redirected to them.

The recent opening of the Mutzing students’ duplex in Markham district was cause for celebration for the Lae School of Nursing.

The Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology partnered with the School of Nursing to see the project through, though it had taken six years to complete.

Mutzing nursing accommodation opened

The Mutzing duplex will house male student nurses on one side while their female counterparts will be on the other side.

The Lae School of Nursing accommodation took six years to complete due to various financial challenges and issues on ground.

However, a determined School of Nursing management made sure the duplex was completed and ready for its official opening on July 7th.

Funding for new Mutzing police station

Minister for National Planning, Richard Maru, presented a cheque of K500,000 to Member for Markham, Koni Iguan, while Markaham District will put forward K700,000 as its part of the counter-funding.

Present to witness the handover of the payment was Acting Secretary for the Department of National Planning and Monitoring, Koney Samuel, and his Executive Officer, Dennis Kulanawi.

Minister Maru said the Mutzing Police Station was a strategic asset given the history of numerous traffic accidents along the Highlands Highway, including the Morobe section of the highway.
