Violence, an uncivilised way of problem solving

Men who assault women should not think they will get away lightly.

Domestic violence against women and girls is rampant throughout the world and PNG is no exception as reported in the media every day however, there are lawful avenues to sorting out domestic disputes. 

These were the remarks of Justice Panuel Mogish when imposing a sentence term of 25 years with hard labour to a former employee of the Justice Department, who viciously stabbed his wife to death at the Waikele market at Gerehu stage 6. This followed an argument on 14 March, 2014.

Woman gets 13 years for murder

Julina Henry from Liagam, Porgera will serve a prison term of 12-years, five months and two weeks after her time spend in remand at Bomana was deducted from the head sentence of 13 years.

She was convicted on Aug 25, 2016 for the murder of Naomi Henry, on July 21, 2015 at Wildlife in Port Moresby. Both women were married to the same man.

Justice Panel Mogish in sentencing her said the deceased instigated the attack that led to her demise.

The incident took place around 6:30 that morning after Henry went to her husband’s house looking for her son.

Islanders arrested for murder

Herman Keyau, 20, and 28-year-old Alphonse Nakau, of Andra Island in the PNKA LLG, Lorengau, Manus, were arrested and charged with the murder of Hillary Joe Simbai on Jan 22.

Both men are expected to go before the Lorengau District Court on Tuesday this week.

Police allege the killing incident took place on Andra Island after a homebrew drinking spree ended up in a fight.

It is alleged they hit the deceased on the head with a piece of wood. He was admitted to the Lorengau General Hospital but succumbed to his injuries two days later.

Kairuku man arrested for murder

From Akere villae, Ray Morgan was arrested by police on Dec 30, 2016, and charged with the wilful murder of Willie Sarufa on Dec 16, 2016.

He appeared in court for mention on Wednesday where his charge was read and explained to him by Magistrate Mekeo Gauli.

Magistrate Gauli, in reading the summary fact in court, said Morgan attacked the man and killed him without any good reason.

It is alleged Morgan was under the influence of alcohol at the time the offence was committed, which was around 2am on Dec 16.

Moscow unlicensed cabbie 'gave victims spiked oranges'

The driver, 51, is accused of knocking his passengers out with a sleeping drug, then driving to a cemetery where he would rob and abandon them.

Two victims subsequently died, Russia's interior ministry said.

Gold jewellery, mink fur coats, laptops, mobile phones and bank cards were recovered from the suspect's flat.

Police video shows the suspect being arrested and interrogated on a snowy road by armed police.

Kange seeks bail for safety

Kange has been remanded at Bomana since September and is now pleading that he is at risk of being attacked by other prisoners.

He went before a three-man Supreme Court bench today with his lawyer from Young and Williams, Greg Sheppard.

A decision on that bail application has been reserved to a later date.

Sheppard told the court that threats have been issued against Kange by other remandees at Bomana which Correction service officers are aware.

Woman gets 14 years sentence for murder

 The Bomana National Court this week sentenced Lucy Jacob to 16 years in prison however one year nine months was subtracted for time spent in remand.

She was convicted in September over the killing of her husband on January 7 last year along the Hiritano Highway, Central Province.

The court found Jacob stabbed her husband on his chest with a knife, which led to his death.

The offense took place around 5pm that afternoon of January 7 last year after the couple had a heated argument in the PMV truck while traveling along the Hiritano Highway.

Enga woman kills husband’s other wife

The 27-year-old, Serah James of Kipiriminda village in the Kompiam-Ambum district of Enga province is facing murder charges for the death of Veronica Kila, a woman from Western Highlands who was also married to her husband, Chan Kaeyo.

James appeared at the Waigani District Court for a ruling to be handed down on whether there is sufficient evidence against her to stand trial at the National Court.

That ruling did not eventuate as James’ lawyer was unavailable due to family obligations. She asked the court to adjourn her case as she wanted her lawyer in court.

Men in piracy attack appear in court

From Tatana village; Peter Kavea, Bobby Rarua, Boge Madaha Kevau, Leka Alex Rabia, Tatana Kapia and Nolan Lawrence William went before Magistrate John Kaumi today where their charges were read and explained to them.

The case was adjourned to Nov 22 while police continue their investigations into the incident.

Police will now have three months to produce a hand-up brief to the court and the accused, before the accused’s lawyer can file submissions in response to the investigation files. This has been the practice of the Committal Court process.

ESP man killed in Lae

The group of youths allegedly under the influence of home brew had set upon the deceased who was allegedly involved in an earlier fight with one of the suspects who set upon him that morning.

 Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jnr said the group had mobilised after drinking and attacked the deceased as he was beaten and stabbed a couple of times.

Wagambie said the deceased had managed to run away but collapsed along the new freeway foot path.
