Thousands flee Mt Hagen show as police fire teargas

The weekend’s event which saw close to a hundred traditional cultural groups performing, attracted close to 400 international and tens of thousands of local tourists.

Though the event was normal throughout the program from Saturday to Sunday, following the closure of the event on Sunday, thousands of young people gathered outside the showground for ‘Mela’ the Melpa Jump, a traditional courtship which is now popularly called ‘Waipa’. 

Kulang: Move Hagen Show original venue

Kulang said this following reports that the current venue where it was stage was cramped and did not have a big corporate presence at the show.

He said the show was a critical event as far as promotion and preservation of the

Exotic cultural heritage was concerned.

The Minister was in Mt Hagen over the weekend at the invitation of the Mt Hagen Show Committee to officially open the show.

This year’s Mt Hagen Show makes the 57th year of its existence and this makes it one of the oldest cultural event in PNG.

SP supports Hagen Cultural Show with K10,000

SP Brewery’s Corporate Relations manager, John Nilkare said the Brewery was delighted to partner again with the show committee and has been sponsoring the show since 2011.

Nilkare said SP was pushing the ‘Enjoy Responsibly’ campaign to encourage consumers to drink responsibly and alternate their drinks with water.
