Pageant week for MPIP PNG contestants days away

As per tradition, the pageant week will begin with a church service at St. Mary's Cathedral, down town, Port Moresby.

The six contestants will also get their order of appearance during the crowning event as well as their respective topics for the week.

According to deputy chairperson Molly O’Rourke, the topics will cover issues affecting the region.

Activities for the week have already been lined up, including the contestants visiting the maternity wing as well as donating blood.

“So the week will definitely be quite a hectic one,” O’Rourke said.

Miss PNG ready to transfer Crown

And as we count down on the days, Loop PNG asked her about her reign and how she feels about ending it.

Here’s the brief interview:

How has it been juggling the responsibilities of Miss PNG as well as Miss Pacific Island and your personal life?

It’s been really stressful. I think the reason why it’s very stressful for me is my timetable with my studies is really full on.

I’ve had to compromise either one, sometimes I had to compromise my studies or pageant duties to fit in.

Wantok Clothing to style for Miss PNG

Henry Iyaro of Wantok Clothing said this when asked how he felt to be the stylist for Miss PNG entrant to the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant in Samoa in December.

Henry is the design partner of Genevieve Igara - Faleva, of Wantok clothing.

It is a joint family business and 100 per cent PNG owned and operated.

Wantok Clothing was the stylist for Miss PNG entrant last year, who won the best sarong and went on to being crowned Miss Pacific Island.

Project Runway supporting women entrepreneurs

The runway, to be held at Lamana Hotel in Port Moresby, is to attract local designers to show off their work.

This is with the objective to select a fashion stylist for Miss PNG, the PNG entrant to the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant in Samoa in December. This will also provide local talented designers a unique opportunity to showcase their work on the regional platform at the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant.

According to the committee, there will be three categories on show at the Project Runway; the traditionally inspired dress, sarong wear and day/evening wear.

Former queen urges PNG to support Miss Pacific Islands role

When congratulating Abigail, she said let us as a nation support whatever steps she takes next and raise the bar for the Miss Pacific Islands title.

Miss Pacific’s role is to contribute to regional affairs and promote the Pacific Islands as an ambassador of the region for the next 12 months.

She will promote the region’s tourism to draw attention to our challenges as third world peoples and to be role models for our region’s young girls.

Polye proud of Miss Pacific

Opposition Leader Don Polye said in a media statement that Havora’s victory had raised the name of the country and the PNG flag to fly high.

As the alternative Prime Minister, Polye said Havora had made the country proud at the pageant.

“She has been crowned as the toast of the Miss Pacific Island pageant and that she has raised among others our flag to fly high in the Pacific Ocean,” said an elated Polye.

He said she had achieved a victory for the country when claiming the title and had also created a record for PNG.

Miss PNG Abigail Havora crowned Miss Pacific Islands

This is the first time PNG has won the crown in this pageant.

PNG has never won an international or regional crown since the first Miss PNG Eva Arni who went on to win the "Miss Asia" title in 1975.

First runner up is Miss Samoa Ariana Taufao, second runner up is Miss Tonga Brittne Fuimaono, third runner up is Miss Fiji Zaira Begg and fourth runner up is Miss Solomon Islands Deanne Enoch.

Miss Havora also took out two categories, Best Sarong designed by local fashion label Wantok Clothing Limited and Best Talent.
