Court rules in favour of Brazil leader

By four votes to three, the Superior Electoral Court rejected claims that illegal money was used in the campaign.

If found guilty, Mr Temer could have been forced out of the presidency.

The accusations referred to the vote won by Dilma Rousseff with Mr Temer as her running mate. He replaced her when she was impeached last year.

The court looked at whether the Rousseff-Temer presidential campaign in 2014 should have been invalidated because of illegal campaign donations.

He was accused of authorising illicit payments to a jailed former speaker of the lower house of the Brazilian parliament, Eduardo Cunha.

Cunha was sentenced in March to 15 years in prison for corruption, money laundering and tax evasion.

The accusations against Mr Temer were made by O Globo newspaper.

Wednesday's speech began cordially enough, with compliments to female representatives of the Senate and Lower House, who were present at the event at the Planato presidential palace.

He highlighted the importance of women's struggles in Brazil, from gaining equal voting rights to fighting femicide.

He compared the country's successes to others who still treat women as "second class citizens," and praised his wife Marcela and other women in his life for everything they do "in the house, in the home and for their children."
