Media challenged to help end gender-based violence

WHO country representative to PNG, Dr. Pieter Van Maaren said the media’s role in this area is very important.

Maaren said, “Stand with us, stand with the health workers and our partners to eliminate gender- based violence in PNG.”

Maaren urged PNG journalist to create awareness and stand together in line with the Human Together campaign launched by the WHO regional office for the Western Pacific to address this social illness.

Forestry firm claims media bias

The Company’s legal counsel Abdullah Reslan in a statement to Loop PNG said the documents contain various irregularities and are neither endorsed by any proper officer or authority of the National Forest Authority nor were they served on the Company by the Authority.

“Aside from the factual concerns with respect to the documents, it is profoundly troubling to the Company that these purported notices were disseminated without legal or other authority to media organisations, and not the Company in question,” says Reslan.

Finland Pacific (FINPAC) project manager Christina Leala Gale said weather services need to improve on dealing with the media in order to effectively get their weather forecasts out to the communities. 

The FINPAC project is coordinated by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program (SPREP) on behalf of Pacific Island countries.

Attack and harassment of PNG media personnel unacceptable

The media personnel from the Post-Courier, The National and Loop PNG were at the National and Supreme Court precinct in Port Moresby on Wednesday, covering attempts by lawyers representing the Governor and his co-accused to apply for bail, when a group of people set on them.

The incident occurred as the governor and his co-accused were being driven back to the Bomana Correctional Service facility outside Port Moresby.

HK journalists jailed in China

Publisher Wang Jianmin and editor Guo Zhongxiao worked on New-Way Monthly and Multiple Face, which published gossipy news about mainland leaders.

The articles were published in Hong Kong, which has greater media freedoms, but copies were sent to the mainland.

They were arrested in 2014 in Shenzhen, and both men pleaded guilty in court.

Wang was jailed for five years and three months, while Guo was jailed for two years and three months and is expected to be released soon for time served.

Opposition challenges media to be fair

Opposition Leader Don Poyle threw the challenge in a media conference yesterday in Port Moresby.

“Some media houses are deliberately misconceiving and twisting facts,” Polye said.        

 “I advise media to seek advice from their lawyers to verify matters of national importance so they may report the right thing.

“They have the freedom of speech and must report the truth which is verified.”

Media demands transparency from heads of government ministries

Radio Cook Islands talkback host and interviewer Tony Hakahoro says HOMs “absolutely have a duty to the public, they are working  for government voted by the people and are working on behalf of the people – they should be responding to matters of public concern”.

He says ever since starting his radio programme almost a year ago, it’s become “so clear senior government officials are very, very reluctant to be interviewed”.

“Because of the importance of journalism in society, most members of the media abide by certain professional and personal ethics,” Akauola said.

“Many journalists attempt to cultivate an air of neutrality, focusing on reporting of the issues as they are, so that people can judge the facts for themselves, while others focus on offering commentary and analysis from the perspective of particular position.”
