Lae Metropolitan Commander Superintendent Antony Wagambi Jr confirmed the breakout this afternoon.
Supt Wangambi Jr warned city residents to be take precautions and report any sightings to police.
"Two warders on duty have been injured during the break out," he said.
Supt Wagambi Jr said: "The exact number of escapees will be confirmed after head count."
