Baki to discuss future of asylum seekers

Baki said if the Regional Processing Centre is not shut down soon, as ordered by the Supreme Court, there may be serious law and order implications for Manus.

His comment follows the death of 28-year-old Iranian, Hamed Shamshiripou, who was found hanging from the branch of a tree at East Lorengau.

Currently the body is at the morgue at International Medical Health Service Centre (IMHS) at the Manus Regional Processing Centre. A full autopsy is expected to be carried out soon.

The island way of addressing climate change

The Mbuke islanders have silently suffered the long term effects of climate change, caused by global warming, for over five decades now.

With a population of 420, the people have seen and experienced the effects of climate change since the 70s, affecting their way of life including food security and water supply.

Former WWF marine officer and local environmentalist Selarn Kaluwin highlighted that over the years, the villagers have tried to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Manus Provincial Police Commander Chief Inspector David Yapu said the last of the 21 ballot boxes was completed early this morning.

They will now proceed to do quality checks today before elimination begins.

At the end of all primary votes, the two PNC candidates have maintained their lead in both the Regional and Open seats.  

Independent candidate Sam Tasion moved back to fifth spot in the Regional seat after count 21.

In the open seat, sitting MP Ronny Knight dropped to sixth spot with 1,498 at the end of primary vote count.

Incumbent Open member Ronny Knight has also climbed up to third spot after count 14 and remained there after count 16.  

As of this morning (July 13) , 16 of the 21 boxes were counted. Count 16 is ballot boxes from the Pomutu-Kurti-Andra LLG.

Manus Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector David Yapu, said he has instructed his joint security force personnel to secure the Sahart counting centre.

Loop PNG was informed of certain candidates’ scrutineers alleging foul play during counting.

PPC Yapu confirmed that the chairman of the Provincial Election Steering Committee will be addressing those scrutineers and receive their petition.

Counting officials were on break at the time this report was published.

Final evaluation on desalination project completed

The pilot project paves way for similar projects to be implemented for other atoll islands affected by the effects of climate change.

This results in the rise of sea level which is affecting the drinking water source of rural communities.

The project was launched on May 10, 2016, in Manus Province and installed on five island villages, namely Bipi, Mbuke and Whal, Nauna, Mal and Aawa islands.

Four desalination plants were installed on the islands of Mbuke and Whal, and six on Bipi Island.

​PM visits Manus

Pomat is contesting the Manus Open seat while Benjamin is running to retain his seat as Manus governor.

The Prime Minister was received at Momote airport by Governor Benjamin, Manus Provincial Administrator Andrew Posong, PPC Manus Chief Inspector David Yapu and other senior officers of Manus Provincial Administration, Heads of National Government Agencies, Provincial Executive members and other Community Leaders.  

PPC Yapu said the joint Security Forces provided a full escort for PM O’Neill to the NBC beach at Lorengau town.

Polling venues for Manus Province

Manus is the only province with one district - Lorengau. It however has two seats; the open and regional seats.

Polling in the province will commence on Saturday 24 June and will be carried out for 21 days till 3 July.

Manus has 160 polling venues covering its 12 Local Level Governments and 131 wards.

He wants the accused perpetrator be made an example of.

The irate member is now demanding the removal of all those processed at the Manus centre before his people “rise up against them”.

“These are only the cases that are made public. There are many unreported.”

He says the refugee should be castrated.

“If it was my daughter, mi no nap ke lo kalabus!” (I will not care about going to jail.)
