Iranian men arrested in Manus

Manus Provincial Police Commander David Yapu when speaking to Loop PNG today said the two refugees were released on K200 bail this morning after they were arrested on New Year’s Eve and charged for drinking and behaving disorderly in public and resisting police arrest.  

They are 26-year-old Mehdi and 28-year-old Mohammad. Both men are expected to appear on Tuesday at the Lorengau District Court for mention.

PPC Yapu said the two were at Salasia village, near Lorengau when they were arrested by police.

Manus police boss warns leaders to take responsibility

Yapu issued this warning after a ward councillor in Manus was arrested and charged with rape last week.

He said leaders who abused the rule of the law would face the full force of the law.

Yapu confirmed the incident and said the suspect was identified as Buka Pasar, 52 year old of Mundrau ward in the PNKA LLG in Lorengau.

It was alleged that the accused was drunk on Aug 19 at about 3.30am and dropped of the victim at her relatives house at Ward 4 in Lorengau town.

Manus to get new K15m police complex

Costing up to K15 million, in partnership with the Australian Government, the RPNGC Provincial Police Headquarters and Lorengau Police Station’s aim is to increase safe access to law and justice services and support police in making communities safer.

Speaking on behalf of Manus Governor Charlie Benjamin was Deputy Governor John Popot, who says this new police station will boost police morale. It will also instill respect and appreciation from the public for police work within Lorengau.

Manus police commend people for help

The suspects, 19-year-old Eddie Mulou is the son of a police officer from Tong Island was arrested along with his accomplice Kelly Kuwoh, 25-years-old of Kolwin village, Lorengau.

They entered Lorengau Enterprise shop just as it was about to open for daily operations armed with a shot gun and a bush knife and held up the shop assistant stealing K48,500 in cash and store goods worth about K71,000.

The two men were apprehended with the help of the communities in Lorengau and have appeared in court this week for mention.
