Manus Island detention centre

The 23-year-old man was flown to Australia yesterday, 24 hours after he set himself ablaze in apparent protest in front of visiting United Nations officials.

But he died of his injuries in a Brisbane hospital on Friday afternoon.

In a statement, Australia's immigration minister, Peter Dutton, said appropriate support was being provided to the man's wife and friends.

His death will be referred to the Queensland coroner.

He was one of six people sent by Australia to Nauru who harmed themselves this week.

Internal gates at the Manus Island detention centre have been opened and the refugees and asylum seekers inside are now allowed to move around more freely, detainees say.

Contempt case against Baki filed

Joshua Kaluvia, a former Salvation Army worker at the Manus Island detention centre, had been facing trial for the wilful murder of Barati in February 2014.

Kaluvia was meant to appear in court in the town of Lorengau on Manus Island this week to continue the trial, but the court was told he had escaped from remand at the Lorengau prison.

A spokesman for PNG Correctional Services confirmed Kaluvia was missing.

“The escapee is Joshua Kaluvia from Muliagani Village in the West New Britain Province,” he said in a statement.
