Another user in the dark web - a hidden part of the internet where guns, drugs and child abuse images are traded - alerted police, a spokesperson said.

The boy's body was subsequently found in the cellar of a house in Herne, North Rhine-Westphalia.

Police say the 19-year-old suspect may be armed.

Searches are being carried out in towns near Herne, which lies in the Ruhr area, a heavily industrialised region.

Reports say the suspect, who is on the run, is a martial arts enthusiast.

 

Police: Kentucky trooper shooting suspect is shot and killed

Trooper Joseph Cameron Ponder, who was 31 and had been on the force less than a year, was conducting a traffic stop Sunday night on Interstate 24 when the driver fled, Kentucky State Police said.

A chase ensued with the suspect stopping abruptly, causing the trooper's vehicle to "make contact" with the rear of the suspect's vehicle, said Trooper Jay Thomas, a state police spokesman.

Officer shooting prompts manhunt in northern Illinois

Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Cmdr. George Filenko tells WBBM radio that an officer was shot Tuesday morning in Fox Lake, 55 miles north of Chicago. The report said the officer's condition was not immediately available.

The search has prompted the lockdown of Grant Community High School and disrupted Metra commuter rail service on the Milwaukee District North Line.

Target of 18-day manhunt killed in California

Benjamin Peter Ashley, 34, was struck by several rounds after he failed to comply with orders to drop the weapon as he walked toward foothills east of Bakersfield on Saturday, Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood told The Associated Press.

Ashley may have turned the 9 mm handgun on himself after being shot by the deputies, Youngblood said. An autopsy planned for Monday will determine the cause of death.

Police say suspect in custody in Louisiana officer's death

Major Doug Cain of the Louisiana State Police identified the suspect as Grover Deandre Cannon and said he was wanted not only in the fatal shooting of Officer Thomas LaValley on Wednesday but also in connection with another shooting in July.

The capture was the result of efforts by the FBI, the Shreveport Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Service, Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office, and Louisiana State Police. The FBI offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to Cannon's arrest.

Manhunt in Memphis continues after officer, 33, fatally shot

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said during a news conference that police were alerted about 9:18 p.m. Saturday that an officer had been shot multiple times.

Armstrong said the officer was transported in critical condition to a hospital, where he died.

In a statement Sunday morning, Memphis Police identified the slain officer as Sean Bolton, 33. Police also said that a civilian had used Bolton's radio to notify police about the shooting. No further details were released.

For escapee, prison now will mean 23 hours a day in a cell

David Sweat, who was shot and wounded during his June 28 capture, was taken early Sunday from Albany Medical Center to the infirmary at the Five Points Correctional Facility in the central New York town of Romulus, the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said in a news release.

Gov. Cuomo: Inmates had sights on Mexico but ride backed out

David Sweat, 35, was running from a state trooper Sunday afternoon when he was shot twice in the torso less than 2 miles from the Canadian border. Sweat was in serious condition Monday at a hospital.

Cuomo told the Capitol Pressroom radio program that Sweat was starting to relay information to police about his escape from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora on June 6 with fellow inmate Richard Matt, who was killed Friday afternoon.
