Madang market opens for business

Madang Town Mayor Joe Yama told this newsroom that the market is one of Madang’s economic corridor for local people who sell their produce every day.

He said the law and order situation is now under control and people have gone back to doing business.

The market was closed after the beheading of a teacher in Bau, which resulted in chaos and water disruptions to the province’s capital.

Rise in informal markets a health hazard, says Madang mayor

Speaking in a press conference last week, Yama says vendors resort to sell whatever they want to and keep on throwing rubbish wherever they please, which is against set rules.

He says Madang Urban LLG always gets the blame for the increase in illegal activities and law and order problems, but most of these activities are caused by people who know the rules yet continue to break them.

The MULLG knows that some vendors depend entirely on the income earned from selling goods and services in the market, but rules must be respected.
