France optimistic of global climate treaty

COP21 and French Foreign Minister, Laurent Fabius was full of optimism as the week opened  describing it as, “The Week of Hope.”

“It is my hope that this ‘Week of Hope’ will be completed with a universal treaty. We hope to reach a consensus and I will use my conviction and determination to bring this to bear,” said Fabius while addressing the Joint High Level segment that will kick-start the ministerial negotiation.

Europe, US split over form of Syria talks

The Europeans invoke the success of the Iran nuclear talks in arguing for a similar format — with key additions.

Iran negotiated with the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany to reach their July 14 agreement. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius on Wednesday called for a similar arrangement "enlarged with regional partners."

The Americans, in contrast, want a tighter group, without the Europeans.

Iranian foreign minister to join nuclear talks on Friday

France announced Thursday that Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius is joining the talks in Vienna on Saturday.
