Late Martin Beni

Sporting Icon Forgotten: Micah

In a tribute to the national boxing hero, late Martin Beni’s funeral service recently said: “Martin’s story is quite sad that he did not get the national recognition he deserved for what he did for the country in 1974, when he knocked out Australian’s best and champion boxer, Collin Cassidy in the 9th round sending shockwaves right across the nation.

Beni Fought For Freedom

He was the pride and inspiration of the 60s and 70s generations that were swept up by the push for independence by our political leaders.

Beni challenged the perception at that time that, to be white is right, mighty, invincible and unbeatable. The defeat of every boxer that late Beni took on from Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines and elsewhere, instilled pride in our people. Finally a black native was able to punch white men and knock them down in the boxing ring.

Beni farewelled

The 70 year old former Commonwealth champion was officiating at a recent Oceania Fights Promotions (OFP) PNG Light Heavyweight Championships when he collapsed from a suspected heart failure. Beni was later pronounced dead after he was rushed to hospital.

Dignitaries, executives of OFP, PNG boxing council, fellow boxers and the boxing family, friends and the media joined the Beni family today to remember and farewell PNG’s pioneer national boxing hero and sporting icon the late Martin Beni.
