Essential equipment for PMGH labour ward

This was made possible through a partnership between Steamships and Karimbelle.

The donation was received by Sr. Mary Sitaing, who manages the POMGEN labour ward, and Dr. Hilda Tanimia, acting coordinator for the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit.

Previously, Karimbelle donated delivery beds, phototherapy equipment, infant warmers, infant resuscitators, curtains, towels, and linens.

PMGH delivers 40 New Year babies

Susan Michael, a mother from Simbu, delivered the heaviest baby for New Year’s Day; a bouncing baby boy weighing 4.3 kg.

Dilala Kiniwi, 31, from Southern Highlands Province birthed a baby girl weighing 3.75 kg. Kiniwi said in 2016, she delivered a set of twins, a boy and a girl, on Christmas Day. She was happy to have another special baby again.

Easter babies exceed manpower capacity

It was even alarming when many of those who gave birth were teenage girls, who are regarded by health workers as at high risk.

Staff at the Labour Ward worked around the clock to deliver the 182 babies. On Good Friday, 45 babies were born, Saturday 39 babies, Easter Sunday 48 babies, and 50 babies on Easter Monday.

Shift team leader and midwife, Sister Dephney Hevelawa said due to the extra workload, staff had to take double shift during the long Easter weekend.

She said the beds were all full and mothers had to be assisted to deliver on the floor.
