Poroma leaders asked to accept new electorate

Kila’s response comes after President of Poroma LLG, Philip Wena released a statement objecting the proposal of the new electorate.

Kila brushed aside speculations by Wena, that the population of Kutubu and Bosavi is more than 50,000.

Wena had written to the Electoral Boundaries Commission objecting a submission for a new electorate for Kutubu Bosavi in the Nipa District of Southern Highlands Province.

Locals face anxiety and fear

In a phone conversation last night, Isaac Haboro said tremors can still be felt and there are still rumblings underground.

He said all this is new to the people and fear is driving many away from village, which is even riskier.

“There are loud noises like thunder rumbling, underground. We don’t know what this is but people are scared and running away. Some are going by motor/canoe over the lake, others are taking the road. But this is risky. And the more we’re left in suspense, more people will flee to their death,” he said.

Day 4: No relief yet

For some, like those at Baguale in the Kutubu LLG, Southern Highlands Province, the little they have is running out.

Villager Paul Ipakase told Loop PNG that today marks day four since the devastation.

He expressed sadness that neither of the companies in the area have tried to help the locals.

Ipakase said all villagers have been scattered since the disaster, and most have now gathered at the Baguale Primary School.
