Wigmen hold off Lahanis

Tries in the first half to Charlie Buka and Amos Kafare gave the Lahanis a 10-6 lead at half time.

The Wigmen's only four pointer came from McKenzie Kei.

The Hela boys found their rhythm in the second half and pushed to the lead after Junior Rau and Towari Kenake crossed over.

The Lahanis never gave up and fought their way back into the contest ten minutes out from full time with another try to Buka.

But the Wigmen were equally determined for the two points and held on until the full time siren.

The man of the match was awarded to Kenake.

Provincial Government boosts Wigmen with K600, 000 backing

 

In presenting the cheque yesterday, Hela Provincial Administrator, William Bando said the Hela Wigmen rugby league team is a brainchild of the late Governor, Anderson Agiru .

“We respect what he started. We need to carry on the work the late Governor Agiru left behind. This is for them to finish off the season,” said Bando.

Hela Wigmen Club Chairman, Andy Hetra thanked the Provincial Government for their continued support to the club.

Mioks stomp over Wigmen

The Mioks hit the front after five minutes through a penalty converted by halfback Jeffrey Para Saturday afternoon at the National Football Stadium.

Former SP Hunters playmaker, Roger Laka was instrumental having a hand in two tries scored to put the Mioks out to a 12-0 lead by half-time.

The Wigmen narrowed the score to 12-4 midway through the second half when they went wide sending Ian Maliaba over to score.

But this was all from the Wigmen as Mioks scored two more times through Levai Bobby and Junior Bobby to set up an easy win.

Wigmen to honour Agiru

Club chairman, Andy Hetra, said this will be to commemorate the official ending of the posthumous term of the governorship of Agiru, who passed away on April 28, 2016.

Hetra said the Wigmen will play the EPG Enga Mioks in round 7 this Saturday, June 17, and the PRK Mendi Muruks on Sunday, June 25.

“Late Governor Agiru’s 5-year term in office ceases when Hela goes into polling on Monday, June 26,” he said.  

“Agiru was the pioneering patron of the Wigmen Franchise in 2013 and the founder of the Hela Wigmen Rugby League brand.

Wigmen thrash Vipers

The Wigmen hit the lead in the first five minutes after Clyde Name dived over on the wing.

The Vipers were able to hit back just before the break when centre Lawrence Kuso scored.

However, the kick from Maxwell Doriga was unsuccessful, leaving the score at half-time at 6-4.

Poor ball handling in the second half from the Vipers meant more possession for their opponents.

The Wigmen made the Vipers pay dearly, scoring twice in ten minutes through Standford Talita and Paul Karbi.

This brought the score to 16-4.

Tigers still undefeated

In Minj, the Wigmen def. Waghi Tumbe 22-12 while in Goroka, the Lahanis def. EPG Enga Mioks 38-14.

To the game in Lae, the Tigers def. PRK Mendi Muruks 16-4.

Across to Kokopo, the Gurias def. NCDC Port Moresby Vipers 22-14.

Gurias and Wigmen draw

The fullbacks from both sides scored the first two tries of the match with Konie Bernard crossing over for the Gurias and Junior Rau for the Wigmen minutes later.

After the first ten minutes, the Gurias started to dominate, keeping the Wigmen in their own half.

With playmaker Stanley Olo directing play, the Gurias hit the lead again after Olo sent Eliakim Lukara racing in to score in the 24th minute.

The back end of the first half saw scrappy play with poor ball handling from the two teams.

Tigers edge out Wigmen

The Tigers raced away to 16-0 lead with tries from Pasu Awane, Enoch Sine and Robert Vuia.

The Tigers continued to dominate possession while the Wigmen struggled to keep up with a fast paced attack.

After managing to muscle up in their defence, the Wigmen finally found their rhythm and got on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute, after Steven Mark sliced through the defence to run away and score under the posts.

A successful conversion from five eighth William Mone brought the score to 16-6, which was the score at the break.

Wigmen beat Muruks in Digicel Cup season opener

The Wigmen were on the board after six minutes through good vision from halfback David Joseph who ran a second man play to put Standford Talita into space to score.

A mistake from Muruk’s fullback and PNG Pukpuk’s star, Tisa Kautu led to the second try from the Wigmen in similar fashion, but this time to Junior Rau.

An unsuccessful conversion from captain and five-eighth William Mone put the score at 8-0.
