Germany defeated Korea Republic 2-0 at Sir John Guise Stadium tonight in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

German backline, led by Captain Rebecca Knaak, Pia Sophie Wolter, Isabella Hartig and Dina Orschmann, withstood their rival's attack.

Both teams had many chances in the second half to score but failed to hit the back of the net in front of 7,218 screaming fans.  

The two goals scored in the first half of the match were from the boots of Dina Orschmann and Stefanie Sanders.

Korea Republic will take on reigning champions and unbeaten Germany at the Sir John Guise Stadium while Mexico will play Venezuela at Bava Park. Both games kick off at 7pm local time.

Both teams currently share three points however Korea Republic is second on the ladder ahead of Mexico in third place due to the total number of goals scored so far in the tournament.

They each have registered a win and a loss so far in the tournament and played each other in their first match where Mexico left Korea Republic scoreless 2-0.

Korea had reason for cheer as they recovered from an early setback to earn a spot in the Quater finals.

It was the vice captain Yeji Namgung 75th minute goal that boalstered the nil all tie after the break from a penalty to get Korea into the game.

Four minutes later Chaerin Han slots in another goal that boosted Koreas momentum to lead 2-0.

But that was not all as Seongmi Kim sealed the victory in the 89th minute with a curled right-footed effort beyond Venezuelas Keeper Franyely Rodriguez for the victory.

The last time they met was during the final group-stage game at Canada in 2014 where the Asian side secured a crucial 2-1 victory.

This time, Mexico had the upper hand with more technique.

Mexico scored through Jacqueline Crowther and Kiana Palacios both in the second half.

The first half was a tough encounter where both teams displayed tough defense.

Mexico had more possession of the ball right throughout the match while Korea Republic only had 44 percent ball possession.

Group D kicks off with an exciting clash between heavyweights Germany and Venezuela.

The three times champion will be aiming to retain the title as they kick-off their World Cup campaign while Venezuela will be making their debut.

The match will commence at 4pm at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.

The Germans will be making their sixth appearance in this World Cup, and have included five players in their squad who played at the last World Cup in Canada.
