USA happy for opportunity to play for medals

However, they were happy to have another opportunity for the medals this Saturday in the third and fourth playoffs.

USA coach Michelle French commended Korea DPR for making it through to the finals saying it is a huge success for the Korea DPR team and for their country for making it through to the finals.

“I thought for the first 90 minutes we did well enough to be in the game but it’s just extremely disappointing right now for our players who have used excessive amount of energy and every piece of their heart to get us back in the game,” French said.

Korea DPR secures grand final spot

They defeated the United States 2-1 in the first semifinal at the Sir John Guise Stadium after 30 minutes extended time.

The Koreans, in red, scored through defender Jon Son Yon and midfielder Ri Hyang-sim.

USA, in white and blue, scored through defender Natalie Jacobs before extra time in the second half.

It was an intense match as both teams put up a good fight in the first half.

The Koreans displayed good ball control and clever techniques.

Semi-finals set for FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup

They’re Asian duo Japan and Korea DPR, European team France and the United States.

The first match will see Korea DPR take on USA. The last time they met back in 2012, USA won 2-1 after extra time.

After over two weeks of competition, former winners USA and Korea DPR are determined to lift the trophy once again by making it to the grand final.

USA is hoping to be crowned champions for the fourth time while Korea DPR is determined to take the title for the second time around.

Chavas proud to be first goalie to receive award

Chavas received the award for her outstanding performance during the victory over Germany 1-0 in the knockouts of the tournament.

In the match, Germany kicked three shots on target out of 12 attempts.

Chavas did extremely well to help her team qualify for the semifinal by saving the three on target attempts.

Chavas was speechless after the match but said she was proud to receive the award.

“I didn’t expect to be awarded the Player of the Match, I just did my job and I’m very happy.”

Top four confirmed for World Cup semis

The last teams standing are Japan, Korea DPR, the United States and France.

Korea DPR was first to qualify after defeating Spain 3-2 in the first quarterfinal match.

Japan was the next to qualify, grabbing an easy win against Brazil 3-1 in the second quarterfinal.

USA defeated Mexico 2-1 in the third quarterfinal to secure their spot in the semifinal while reigning champions, Germany, lost their campaign to retain the Cup after a shocking loss to France 1-0 in the last quarterfinal match.

Japan books a semi-final spot in their fourth attempt

The Young Nadeshiko in their fourth appearance made no mistake outplaying Brazil in all facets of the quarterfinal match winning convincingly by a 3-1 goal.

In the other quarterfinal played yesterday in Port Moresby, Spain were sent packing by Korea DPR 3-2 in a tough challenge where the winner was found in extra time.       

Korea DPR is chasing their second title in their fifth appearance. 

The Asian giants precede as first teams through to the last four.

France and Germany ready for showdown

The two European teams will take the field at 7:30pm in what is expected to be a showdown at the Sir John Guise Stadium.

France will be hoping to make the top four once again like they did in the 2014 World Cup in Canada, while Germany is out to defend the Cup.

France coach Gilles Eyquem said earlier that the team is focused on a good defensive game as Germany is a very good team and usually, when they have an opportunity to score, they take it.

Korea DPR send Spain packing after normal time

The first quarterfinals of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup played at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby went down to the last minutes of the match as both countries were tied 2-2 at fulltime.

With the scores locked at the end of normal time, both teams were given an extra 30 minutes to find a winner, and the first 15 minutes did not find one.

In the second half of extra time, Kim who was outside the pack of players, from a corner kick hit the back of the net, after Spain goalkeeper Maria Quinones punch the ball forward. 

Korea DPR lead Spain 2-1 at halftime

The undefeated Korea DPR showed their muscle taking a two lead by the 30th minute of the game. 

DPR midfielder,  Ju Hyo Sim headed the Koreans into the lead on the 18th minute from the corner kick by Jon So Yon Corner.

And the Koreans struck again in the 30th minute to the boot of Ri Hyang Sim.

She tapped the ball into the net after the Spain Goal Keeper Maria Quinones ran out to attack the ball from a penalty kick.
