Morata off-season comps in progress

The competition was in the past strictly just for residents of Morata but has since opened up to other nearby suburbs, including Tokarara and Gerehu.

Volleyball coordinator Nikki Kara said both competitions are progressing well with the finals scheduled for the end of February.

“We started back in December of last year and are currently into game 11 of round one.

“We play every weekend on Saturday and Sunday as well. So far, everything is going good.”

Finals for Governor’s Cup moved to Monday

Tournament coordinator Sengelo Skonga said this is upon advice from the Governor’s office yesterday afternoon.

In the men’s Bowl division, the Freeway Bumpers will play Ialibu Hawks in the grand final. For the Plate, 54 Bears will go up against the Megusa Brothers.

The Cup division is still into the preliminary finals, with the Mountain Bulls to play the Erima Wanderers while Ex Rocks will do battle against defending champions Garden Hills Eagles.

Winners from both games will book their spots in the grand final.

NCD Governor’s Cup underway

The annual rugby league event was launched yesterday at the Kone Tigers Oval.

There are 42 teams taking part this year in the tournament that started today and will end on December 31.

Tournament Coordinator, Sengelo Skonga, said games are being played at two venues – Kone Tigers Oval (Pools A-D) and Ipi Park (Pools E-H).

In the results from this morning at Ipi Park, Moutana Roosters drew with Saraga Dwellers 10-10, Freeway Bumpers def. 6 Mile Tigers 8-4, Port Moresby Muruks def. ATT 8-2, and Garden Hills Eagles def. Car Wash Blacks 14-4.

Woitape man arrested and charged for murder

Magistrate Cosmas Bidar sounded the warning when reading to court the allegations against a Woitape man from Central Province who was arrested and charged over the murder of another man at the Kone Tigers oval in Waigani last month.

Alex Kelei appeared at the Waigani District Court on Friday where his charge was read and explained to him in court.

Kelei was arrested over allegations he chopped a man on both his legs during a fight at the oval on Aug 27.
