PNG students abroad celebrate 48th Independence

They reflect on Papua New Guinea’s 48th Independence anniversary from Australia.

Despite the challenges and negative news surrounding their homeland, this day remains a beacon of patriotism for PNG citizens worldwide, a day to cherish their hard-won freedom.

This year's event also showed support to local PNG businesses in Townsville, fostering a sense of home for both local and international JCU students. It's an effort to bridge cultures and nurture a sense of belonging.

New agreement supports management of deadly mosquito born viral disease epidemics in the Pacific

Disease epidemics from viruses spread by mosquitoes are happening more often across the Pacific region with 96 outbreaks (69 dengue outbreaks, 12 Zika virus and 15 Chikungunya) reported between January 2012 and May 2021.

The Pacific Mosquito Surveillance Strengthening for Impact (PacMOSSI) project is funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) to support the management of the increasing number of vector borne disease outbreaks in the region.

Twinning Project partnership extended

That partnership has now been extended to 2021.

The UPNG-JCU Twinning Partnership began in 2015 as a three-year project, and was aimed at building teaching capacity and supporting collaborative research in Australia, Papua New Guinea, and the broader Asia Pacific Region.

“We’re excited to continue this partnership, with ongoing support from the Australian Government,” JCU project director Dr Jennifer Gabriel said.
