Kuwait charges 29 people over deadly Shiite mosque bombing

The Kuwait News Agency reported that those facing trial include seven Kuwaitis and 13 "illegal residents" — a reference to Kuwait's "bidoon" community that is made up largely of desert nomads considered stateless by the government.

Also facing trial are five Saudis, three Pakistanis and a fugitive whose nationality is not yet known.

They face a range of charges such as illegally possessing explosives, incitement to violence and joining an extremist group.

Habib Essid said construction aimed at rendering the border "impassable" by jihadi fighters and vehicles is expected to run through year-end.

Essid told Tunisian TV late Tuesday that the barrier will cover 168 kilometers (about 105 miles) of border with restive Libya and include fencing, a sand wall, trenches and surveillance posts.

Deadly strikes by US-led coalition targeting IS in Raqqa

It was one of the largest coalition operations carried out in Syria to date, the coalition said Sunday.

At least 16 airstrikes were reported late Saturday and early Sunday, triggering successive explosions that shook the city and created panic among residents, activists said.

The U.S.-led coalition often targets IS-held towns and cities in Syria, but the overnight strikes on Raqqa were rare in their intensity.

2 suicide bombings kill 13 in northeastern Nigeria

It is the fourth attack in a week in which at least 162 people have been killed, including four suicide bombers, as Boko Haram Islamic extremists appear to obey an Islamic State group order to step up attacks in the holy month of Ramadan.

Nigeria's homegrown extremist group became the IS group's West Africa franchise earlier this year.

In the most deadly attack, the militants targeted several mosques in Kukawa town on Wednesday, gunning down nearly 100 praying worshippers. Kukawa is 180 kilometers (110 miles) northeast of Maiduguri, the biggest city in the northeast.

The British Foreign Office, meanwhile, raised the death toll of British tourists killed in Friday's attack from 27 to 30. Other European tourists were among the dead. The attack was Tunisia's deadliest ever and threatens to be a devastating blow to its tourism sector.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, in which Tunisian student Seifeddine Rezgui opened fire on a beach in the resort of Sousse. He was later killed by police.

An upstart local affiliate of the Islamic State group, calling itself the Najd Province, claimed responsibility for the attack that was carried out by a suicide bomber during midday Friday prayers inside one of Kuwait's oldest Shiite mosques.

The IS group views Shiites as heretics and refers to them derogatively as "rejectionists" among other slurs.

The paper said that an IS cell leader instructed the Sun's investigative reporter, who was posing as an aspiring militant, to target the parade.

IS claims blast at Shiite mosque in Kuwait's capital

A posting on a Twitter account known to belong to the Islamic State group claims the explosion was work of a suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt.

The attack was claimed by an affiliate of the Islamic State group calling itself the Najd Province, the same group that claimed responsibility for a pair of attacks on two Shiite mosques in Saudi Arabia in recent weeks.

Mohammed al-Faili, 32, told The Associated Press that his 70 year-old father was killed in what appeared to be a bombing attack.
