Inter-Departmental Election Committee (IDEC)

Counting must proceed says Pomaleu

His comments follow the extension of the Return of Writs to 05th August, 2022.

Secretary Pomaleu said the extension has been issued because counting and declarations have been slow. By the original date of Return of Writs, it was still impractical for the Electoral Commission to return most of the writs.

“In a democratic process, we expect disruptions by candidates and their supporters, and there have been disputes and petitions.

IDEC Defends Electoral Process

Chairman of IDEC and Secretary for the Department of Prime Minister and National Executive Council, Ivan Pomaleu, says against all odds, election officials were able to conduct safe and free elections throughout most parts of the country, during this COVID-19 pandemic.

“I commend the hard working election officials for your devotion and commitment during this time. Despite confronting challenges, you were able to oversee and conduct polling peacefully,” said Pomaleu.

Funding, security and manpower

Chief Secretary and chairman for IDEC, Isaac Lupari, said funding should not be an issue for operations in the elections.

He spoke of the government’s commitment towards the 2017 general elections, saying the government is a major supporter for the smooth running of the elections in the country.

He urged the electoral officials to change the public perception of Hela Province being one of the major hotspots for security risks.

Lupari said the presence of the three disciplinary forces is not to intimidate the people but to help where necessary.
