Indian Wells: Serena and Venus Williams to meet in third round

Serena won 7-6 7-5 against Kiki Bertens before Venus won 6-3 6-4 against Sorana Cirstea to tee up a third-round clash.

That will be their earliest meeting at a tournament since the first match they ever played - a second-round tie at the 1998 Australian Open.

Serena's first-round win earlier this week was her first victory since a 14-month absence after giving birth. She leads her elder sister 17-11 in all-time meetings.

Elsewhere, US Open finalist Madison Keys was eliminated by wildcard Danielle Collins, the world No 116.

Federer wins Indian Wells

Federer won 6-4 7-5 to register a fifth championship at the California tournament, to add to the Australian Open trophy that kick-started his year.

Seeded ninth, 36-year-old Federer again belied his years and beat his Swiss compatriot Wawrinka for the 15th consecutive time on a hard court.

The match began at breakneck speed, the hard court enabling both players to play aggressively. Wawrinka's power translated well, but not as well as Federer's guile.

Kyrgios withdraws from Indian Wells clash with Federer due to illness

Kyrgios says he believes he has food poisoning.

The controversial 21-year-old added on social media that he needs to be at his best to play Federer, and didn't take the decision lightly.

"At this stage we think it's food poisoning, and I'm praying it's nothing more," he said.

"After a restless night of being sick I have nothing left and to play a great champion like Roger, I need to be at my best to have a chance.

"These are the matches we train for but I'm in no fit state to take to the court.

Nadal marches on in California

After an evenly contested start, Nadal moved through the gears to take the first set in just 31 minutes, before a tighter second almost went the distance. The Spaniard sealed a 50th career win in the Californian desert 6-3 7-5.

Nadal has 28 Masters 1000 titles to his name, as well as 14 Grand Slams but he is seeking a first title of 2017 and will have to do it the hard way with a host of huge names in his half of the draw.

Konta wins battle of Brits

Konta, the British No 1 and 11th seed, moved into the third round of the BNP Paribas Open with a 6-4 6-4 win on Stadium 1.

Their only previous meeting came four years ago in a second-tier event in Barnstaple which saw Watson retire injured after losing the first four games.

This time it reached a proper conclusion and Konta, ranked 97 places above her opponent, made her quality tell despite some tough moments.
