Workshop on human rights to be held

The workshop is scheduled from June 19-20 at the Sambra Haus, Port Moresby.

It will be hosted by the gender development and human rights branch from the Department in partnership with the UN Office of the Human Rights Commission (UNOHRC).

The two-day in house induction training will focus on international treaties, conventions obligation and documentation processes on human rights.

Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), human rights adviser Kedar Poudyal, says more needs to be done to address gender and human rights in PNG.

The rights inherent to human beings, whatever the nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, religion, language or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination.

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner Human Rights is pushing likeminded youth, sporting reps and emerging leaders to reach out to peers and everyone in general to know their basic human rights.

Police officers get training on Human Rights and Law Enforcement

This follows the launch of the training program last week by Chief Training Instructor Edwin Maritua at Bomana Police Training College and will be rolled out around the country 

Twenty-two police officers, including two female officers operating in Vanimo, West Sepik Province, were the first in 2017 to complete the four-day training.

The training modules are designed to strengthen understanding within the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) on the obligation to respect, protect, and fulfill human rights while conducting their duties.

Start treating gender violence as human issue: Sinapa

This has been stressed by Esmie Sinapa, Co-founder of Women Arise Movement PNG.

Sinapa aired this view point in a meeting on Thursday with various women groups, NGOs, government representatives, men and youth to address GBV as an epidemic in itself.

She emphasised that this requires a consensuses approach from everyone and called on government officials not to politicise the issue.

Other women leaders also expressed their views on how best to address the high rate of GBV in the country.

UNHCR concerned about Australia's ban

UNHCR's regional representative Thomas Albrecht said Australia should offer protection and respect to people arriving by boat.

He said the basic human right of every person to seek asylum from persecution is not diminished by their mode of arrival.

Mr Albrecht said those forced to flee persecution need and deserve conducive conditions of protection, and a sustainable long-term solution.

Meanwhile, the Australia-based Human Rights Law Centre says Canberra's proposed ban could affect 320 refugees already living there.

Pacific dialogue centres on human rights

The consultation will assist 11 Pacific countries to prepare for the third cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) by sharing stories of impact and major gains, including examples of best practice in the region.

It is the latest event organised by the Pacific Community (SPC) through its Regional Rights Resource Team (RRRT) to help countries commit to, and observe, international human rights standards.

RPNGC and IOM has wide reaching effect

This cooperation is one of many that the constabulary has with the United Nations as the organisation is collaborating with the force in the UN system in regards to UN human rights and with UN women.

She says the United Nations has been in the country for a very long time and now currently has 14 UN agencies funds and programs which are led by the UN Resident Coordinator.

Human Rights are central to climate change struggle: Tuvalu PM

Sopoaga says critically important aspects of addressing climate change have been pushed out, eroded or “drowned out” by the agenda of developed countries and he is committed to ensuring that they are given attention ahead of, and during the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 21) meeting in Paris later this month. 

“Human rights have been largely ignored in the climate change discourse but it has to be an integral part of, and be in the centre of discussions,” says Sopoaga.

No country has yet achieved equality between men and women – UN human rights chief

“Very frequently, we see a preponderance of women experts on panels that discuss issues specific to women and children – as if such issues could not be of deep concern to men,” Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said in his opening remarks to a panel discussion on gender equality held by the Council in Geneva.

“Conversely, discussions on situations of armed conflict, on counter-terrorism, on sanctions regimes, and on the death penalty almost seem as though they are reserved for men,” he noted.
