Plight of Honey the lonely dolphin sparks Japanese anger

The female bottlenose dolphin, nicknamed Honey, was captured in 2005 near Taiji, a western port town that has become notorious for its annual dolphin hunt that was featured in the Oscar-winning 2009 documentary The Cove, media reports say.

The locally owned company operates in the heartland of beekeeping in PNG, with 95 percent located in the Eastern Highlands province.

The business buys honey from local beekeepers, processes it by removing wax and other foreign material and then packages it under its brand name Highlands Honey.

Australian Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells visited New Guinea Fruits recently, as part of her visit to Papua New Guinea and was really impressed.

Teamwork called for in bee disease fight

“As per the declaration by the Minister for Agriculture and Livestock regarding quarantine in the Highlands region, under the Animal Disease Control Act, the Bee Office in Goroka has been in charge in taking preventative and control measures,” Wilson said.

Minister Tommy Tomscoll has called, upon advice, the seven Highlands provinces to restrict movement of bees and materials used for honey production between districts and provinces.

“Area covered included Daulo, Unggai Bena, Henganofi, Okapa and parts of Lufa. Goroka will be completed soon,” Wilson said.
