Court year in review- Governors in court

Western Governor Ati Wobiro is serving a prison term of 10 years for misappropriation after he was sentenced on Nov 18.

He was convicted on July 26 for conspiring with two others to establish the Fly Care Foundation between January 1 and December 30, 2013, by using over K7m funding from the provincial government.

He has since filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against his conviction and sentence and the matter is pending in court.

Kavo refuses Papua LNG Pipeline

Kavo said this following the release of Gulf LNG operator, Total SA’s, Environmental Impact Study (EIS) yesterday justifying the company’s reasons to build its LNG Plant Site in Caution Bay in the Central Province.

He said the report ignored the ‘No Pipeline Policy’ affirmed by the Provincial Government and people.

Kavo case ruling on Friday

The expected ruling was supposed to be done today however, that was further deferred to Friday, May 27.

The Committal Court on April 22 ruled it was satisfied that there is an existence of sufficient prima facie evidence on the charge of misappropriation against Kavo.

What was returnable today in court was a ruling that was supposed to be made to Kavo’s section 96 statements or his response to the district court finding sufficient evidence against him.

District Court ruling on Kavo case deferred

The Committal Court on April 22 ruled it was satisfied that there is an existence of sufficient prima facie evidence on the charge of misappropriation against Kavo.

This will now take place on May 24.

Kavo of Herekela village, Ihu district, Gulf province was arrested on June 17, 2015, on misappropriation charges and released two days later on a K5,000 bail.

Kavo: Decision in best interest of people

Speaking to reporters outside the Court house, Kavo said it has been a long 5 year battle and wait for his people, supporters and family.

He said today’s decision was in the best interest of his province and with the court battle over he can now concentrate on the development of the next big LNG project that will be hosted in his province.

He said the legal battle cost the state a lot of money.

 And he issued a call to police to do their job without compromise.
